How deep can you dig?

I've noticed, when digging a trench around a copper node, that I often reach a depth where I can't seem to dig deeper. This comes to a surface which is a rather tan in color and relatively smooth, although not all on the same level but rather somewhat varied. No matter how hard I continue pounding on this it goes no deeper. Is this an absolute barrier to digging or can one go deeper somehow? I've tried both the antler pick and bronze pick with the same results.

it is a game limit where you can only did so far. I"ve dug in mountains and reached that same point and had to Dig UPwards to keep moving lol. sadly i wanted to dig to china and was not able to.

you can dig down to 8 meters

You ca dig down 8 meters or 16 hits with pick as each hit removes 1/2 meter. This measurement starts from the first place you start digging on "natural" or untouched ground.

Same thing applies to building soil upward: can build up 8 meters starting at natural ground level
