Valheim
My Tames Keep Dying!
during taming my boars and wolves keep dying. Nothing is attacking them and they die almost immediately after being tamed or beginning of taming process. I do not know if it is a bug due to the Hearth & Home update or if it is Valheim Plus. All i know is it keeps happening and it is becoming very upsetting. I have done everything. I have uninstalled the game, I have deleted my mods and run the game normally and everything else. I tested dev commands to see if my spawned tames would stay and they died about 2 hours in real life. Over time it took tames less and less time to die. Is this a bug from Valheim? Why am i getting phantom tame deaths? Thank you.

are you not feeding them?
Doesnt matter
another super quick test OP can do without abandoning his current progress / world is create a new temporary world, use same char, start game in that new temp world and use console commands to:

1. spawn bunch of wood for yourself if needed

2. build super quick, temp workbench + animal pen - like 1min or less to build workbench + 4 x 4 wood square animal pen

3. console spawn 3-4 boars + berries, spend 5-10min taming them

4. once tamed, if boars explode and die again, this is a brand new world, new random location, odds of a hidden dmg source like graveyard, etc are incredibly low in 2nd random world in some random new workbench area created so if boars keep exploding then logical conclusion is a constant factor not tied to world save

e.g. mod or some game alteration even though OP says not using mods

If OP does all this and still has problem, not saying he is lying, not at all - could just be confused about what was and wasn't installed/uninstalled but clearly this is not a base game problem or entire forum would be full of angry customers about boars dying.

unlike wolves or lox, boars are very early progression so if this was base game bug, tons of ppl would be on forums venting. therefore if all of above random test still = true, then OP has some mod affecting his game is my conclusion.
maybe upload the savegame so that we can check that
pls make a portal from stonecircle to the place with the issue

OP is going to have to use console commands if he wants to solve or diagnose this further. All the usual scenarios have been mentioned - mods, unique bug to OP, some base game dmg source, enemy spawn, etc.

1. enable console

2. OP says he can see the boars explode so he knows the exact spot where one died - goto that spot and stand there

3. build small 1x1 or 2x2 square cage

4. use console command to spawn boar 1 (or anything that takes dmg, a nek, whatever

5. jump out of the spot and now sit there and wait 1-2 full game days/nights watching what happens

if the new spawned creature explodes and dies, something is either wrong with that spot - some dmg source you can't see or OP has some hilarious yet sad bug unique to his world / savegame

if the new spawned creature doesn't take any dmg, then I have no other ideas since OP has said tried moving to new spot and says has same problem. that point, either live with unique bug or give up on Valheim. Not being mean but after exploring all diagnosis options, that's what it comes down to.
ty for this elaborate comment. They arent dying currently. I am going to hop off and head to sleep and hopefully when i log back in they will still be alive. Just fyi Mozzy im female lol. You kept saying he so wanted to clarify that with you. Thank you.

Make sure there's absolutely no way skeletons can shoot into the pen. They will kill every single boar. Have workbenches on and around the pen to prevent night time mobs from spawning in. As for wolves honestly unless you dedicate to making an all stone structure with roof there's no protecting them from frostdrakes in the mountains, not worth taming IMO.

I'm not sure how often it happens, but I have seen an issue where structures load in AFTER mobs do, in online servers, allowing mobs to move in or tamed animals to move out of it, before they become solid. That was an older bug though that happened to me before but hasn't since.
thank you for your help :D
I do guard duty in my boar pen. Have a tower in the middle of the pen and sit up there with a bow.

Well thats more than necessary.
I do a lot of taming of boars/wolves. Base game, no addons. I haven't experienced random, unexplained deaths.

With boars, I bring them inside my protected compound for taming to protect them from wild animals or other mob attacks.

For wolves, I've learned to dig a pit, and then build an enclosed small building around it. I leave the door open, get the wolf to chase me into the pit, then jump-climb out, toss in some meat, and shut the door. Wandering mobs don't seem to attack structures to attempt to get to other mobs, like they will for players.

I learned this trick after losing a VERY challenging-to-obtain 2* wolf during training to an greydwarf shaman while I was distracted during an invasion.

However, with H&H I've noticed that tamed animals can now die from wandering into campfires/hearths. I don't recall this ever happening pre-H&H. Maybe I was just lucky then, but I lost a number of 1* wolves yesterday from it.

So check and make sure there's no fire nearby. Shouldn't be an issue with boars though, since they're afraid of fire.

I couldn't figure out why upon returning home (I leave my house doors open usually, since I set up good base defenses for my compounds), there was all kinds of wolf loot in the house. Until some time later I watched a wolf wander into the house, and stand on the hearth until it died. :-\

Last night I would occasionally hear what sounded like boars being killed in my pen, so I went out and watched over the area - started counting pigs and I actually had more than I thought I would. Then, I witnessed a pig giving birth, which made the squeeling sound of death and even spattered blood on the ground - this process from a distance would definatly appear as if your pigs are being killed.

Another thing to watch out for is having a fire source area of effect be slightly inside your boar containment pen. When a boar steps into it they will get frightened and start making noise. They hate fire.
The birthing sound is distinct from the frightened/death sounds but it takes a while to readily identify the differences.
idk the only time this has happened to me was when i placed a campfire in their pen, i just assumed they killed themselves but after i removed the fire they were fine
lol they didnt give birth just died. it may be a mod.
Bees? I've lost boars to mad bees.
