Is it normal that it seems to take a bit more than 2 coal for 1 metal in a furnace or is it a bug?
I do not know if this is a bug but it seems that if I put in the 10 metal and 20 coal in a furnace it has only just not enough coal to smelt all 10 metals. It is only a really small amount more time for the last metal to be done as well and I wondered if this is a bug since it seems like it is supposed to take exactly 2 coal to smelt something

Yeah, it's an off-by-one error in the code. (>= where it should be > or vice-versa) Someone put out a mod that fixes it, surprised IG didn't sort it out while they were improving cooking station UI for H&H.

Actually, I say mod but I think it was more like hacking instructions for modifying the offending .dll file yourself. Not sure it was ever released as a simple plugin.

It is indeed very annoying

It's one of the first things I noticed in the game that annoyed me and continues to annoy me each time I encounter it. Pretty silly oversight. (unless it's intentionally there to punish us in the afterlife :steammocking: )

ya right now it takes 22ish coal for 10 ore... touch annoying.

I've taken to running through my forges and loading up all the ore, back through a second time with coal - this gives them enough time to go from 20/20 to 19/20, then back through a third time with one more coal each to get them back to 20/20. They take care of themselves from there.

It sounds like more of a hassle than it is when you type it out, but when I get back from wherever/whatever, everything will be smelted and all the coal will be used, ready for another round.

And of course, you can always just get the mod that fixes the ratio and skip all that.

So in the end It seems like more of a polish problem. It not actually gamebreaking or important to focus on but just something to fix sometime before launch.

Thx for not making me feel like I'm crazy and that what I think happens actually does happen

I read somewhere that a single piece of coal will burn for 30 seconds, 1 metal bar will take 31 seconds to smelt and a charcoal kiln takes 16 seconds to produce 1 coal. So the ratios are way off.

Seems intended and not that big of a deal.

^^ Better that way. Notice how the smelter holds 20 coal and the kiln produces 25? Already the batching is off, so what's more if the coal/metal ratio is also off? Leaves a little room for loss of coal if deconstructing the smelter, so play it smart. Surely it keeps the player busy by needing the attention once in a while.

IE, its like why hotdogs are sold in 10 and the buns come in with 8.

What in the world haha? No, it doesn't seem intended, and it doesn't make sense either, because if a crazy homeless man could just make a smelter out of his pocket in a fraction of a day then obviously he'd just make the smelter so that he wouldn't have to mind it to completely discharge its contents. All this is doing is adding an element of (admittedly negligible in my opinion) jank to the game. It's like looking at an appendix or a coccyx or earlobes and going "god don't make no trash"
