Upgrade to iron armor or stick with troll hide?
I beat Bonemass and went to the mountains. Those wolves are no joke. Currently running maxed troll hide, the headlamp circlet, an abyss dagger and iron buckler. Eating carrot soup, turnip stew, and sausages. The wolves are tearing me up and I'm having trouble locating silver so far. Should I go back and make iron armor or is it not worth the time? (Honestly I thought people were just whining about the wolves, like they whined about the swamp, and the black forest which weren't really a problem.)

Also is it just me or do some of the mobs that had their attacks sped up not match the animations. I'm a parry and counterattack kinda guy, but I'm having issues getting the timing right on a few creatures and bosses. It's hard to practice when they can 1 or 2 shot you. It's especially annoying when you have yet to get the resources for the zone you are starting, so your shield is pretty much useless.

It all depends on your patience and your crypt situation I guess. Personally I find crypt mining kinda dull so I only went with an iron helmet before moving on. It still takes 50 iron total but it gives you 8 more armor than the comparable troll helmet and doesn't slow you down. It's a straight upgrade. Food buffs will almost always be more instrumental in you tanking a hit than armor on a marginal scale anyway, especially now.

If you have 10 crypts right next to each other and your run skill is high (50+) then sure, just go ahead and go full iron.

In this game, the character is the central aspect. The skills, the equipment, it all focuses on the character. The game is also designed around taking your character to other worlds, so that you can play with friends or join new groups or maybe even just explore a different layout. I see no problem in using other world seeds to find iron (or copper/tin for that matter) and bring it back to the home realm. Under those circumstances mining is a breeze.

And honestly, if you have to choose between food or armor, go with food all day every day. BUT you don't have to choose. The smart thing to do would be to make sure every possible aspect of your character is fully upgraded, including both food AND armor.

In the end it all comes down to patience, as was said. In truth, upgrading to iron isn't mandatory. A skilled player can make better use of the maneuverability that TH offers. However, I have to say that Iron will be the more forgiving of the two. You WILL live more hits with iron.

In my personal opinion, I advocate upgrading. I don't like the risk of missing a parry and getting blasted. To me, death is not a learning experience. Its a mark of shame and failure and my only recourse is to delete it all and start over. So why would I risk all that to skip like 2 hours of mining?
Snipe, kite, and climb on rocks or build a sniping tower if you're going to run around with troll armor in the mountains. The heavier your armor is, the slower you run so you need all that defense cause you can't get away from them. Ice arrows to slow them down, a hammer for knockdown/back. But the best defense is getting on a rock they can't climb onto and using your arrows if you run around sneaking on things with troll armor all day long. Parry/dodge, block, and weapon timing are your best friend in this game. Your wingman is food and elemental weapons/resistance. Use them all for best effect. You can take on every enemy naked and punch your way to success but you have to master the other things first.
I did not bother with bronze armour and I didn't bother with any iron armour either. I made an iron shield, an iron mace, then went into the mountains with troll armour and had no problems at all. You simply have to be careful, and have a modicum of skill. For me it wasn't worth grinding for iron or copper ore in order to make full sets of iron or bronze armour. Your mileage may vary.

Lil Puppy is right as well, less movement penalty makes avoiding enemies and avoid damage easier. Heavier armour means you'll get hit more often, but you can mitigate some of the incoming damage. What works best for each player depends on preference, skill, and play style. You can kite and use a bow with heavy iron armour, but it's easier in leather. You can fight in melee and try to tank enemies while wearing leather, but it's easier in iron armour - or more specifically iron armour is far more forgiving if you miss a block or parry than leather or troll leather.

Man , you are going to mountain with only 20-like defense , headlamp only gives 2 of defense
I truly ask me how u beat bonemass with that set
And yes , make full iron set , you will have 64like defense

I beat Bonemass in troll leather. It took a while because I wasn't well prepared, but I didn't die. It's entirely possible. I'm not that good at the game so I guarantee most other players could pull it off.

Fully upgrading the best armour set you can get in any particular biome before moving to the next biome is basically the equivalent of an "easy" difficulty setting in Valheim. If you spend time grinding resources to upgrade your gear to the maximum possible then the next biome will be easier. If not, then you need to be more careful and/or more skilled.

You weren't wrong to choose the Troll leather, as it provides no movement speed issues, and you don't need a Shield for the fight. Bonemass hit's too hard so it's easier to pay attention to his swings, and run behind him as often as possible while keeping away from the Poison puke. A 2h sledge can keep the pressure on him as you delete his mob spawns and stay out of his swing range, and a 1h club or mace to do extra damage when nothing is going on. Without the movement, you'll risk getting tagged by his strikes, and poison pools, and it all adds up very quickly if you stand still.

You also took your time and patience often kills him (given you keep on damaging him enough, that health regen sucks), you did well.

I beat Bonemass in full iron armor, with an iron shield and an iron mace (all armor/weapons as fully upgraded as possible), the best foods available to iron age, and some meads. I didn't really even have to move, he kinda just bounced off of me.

Just because something is possible, doesn't mean you *have* to make do. Take a little extra grind-time and make it even easier for yourself. His big blobby booty isn't going anywhere.
Troll armor is fine for the swamps but Iron Armor makes it much easier.
Iron armor is needed for the Mountains when getting attacked by multiple creatures.
Silver is more just for Bow, Shield and Helmet.

Full Armor sets order should be Troll Armor, Iron Armor then Black Metal Armor.
No reason to make a full set of Bronze or Silver Armor.
I have stealth/sniped wolves and the ocassional drake in troll armor, but if your going to fight melee you will want to be in Iron, or wolf armor as soon as you can. A group of wolves will kill you fast in troll armor. Frost damage can be rough, so make a bunch of frost potions before going into the mountains until you can make some wolf chest armor or a wolf cloak (which have frost resistance). The Dverger Circlet really isn't armor. It is helpful in dungeons and crypts as it frees up your hands, but I don't normally use it outside. While I am not sure, I would expect the Dverger Circlet to hurt stealth. The Iron mace is very effective against Golems.
