Boat rides with Wolves
Finally got around to tame wolves, and succeeded. On starter island ran first one back to main base but no 1-star or higher so went searching other islands.

Found one and bred a few 1 stars at temp base near mountain biome but wanted them back at main base on starter island.

Found out getting wolves onto boat (can't portal with wolves) was easy - order them to follow, build small ramp higher than boat and push wolf off and down into boat. No probs.

But getting the damn wolf out of the boat once docked at main base is a giant hassle. Wolves can't path over even tiny ledges apparently so can't step off the boat (either kind, karve or longboat) no matter how close to dock or land.

So ended up having to build a stair piece on the dock-side and another stair piece on boat side, but only when the waves were timed right to allow placing the piece while boat was falling below the height of the stair, or collision would occur and actually push the boat away from dock.

Long trial and error later, finally got stairs snapped, then shoved wolf on boat side near the stairs and just onto it. Once there, would finally auto follow with normal pathing to follow off boat and into new pen.

FYI - also for what it is worth, breeding wolves and boars together in same pen seems to work, but they both follow the same distance rule, but with either species.

e.g. both sets will breed, but each seem to count the other as population in terms of stop breeding once too many in same pen. Had thought maybe wolves would only count wolves but if too many boars, then they stop breeding or vice versa.

ended up just making side by side pens with wolves in one, boars other, since there is no space savings by lumping both together.

Beaching the boat on the shores in shallow water and then destroying the boat wouldnt be an option ?
Mozzy Oct 1, 2021 @ 11:39pm
oh! I totally did not even think of that.

Guess I could try taking a karve next time, longboat is lot easier to get wolf into and out of via the stairway build process but karve would take less whacks to destroy.

Will give that a shot next time need to ferry wolves.

Hope it works for you. On a boat travel note; You only need to do a one way travel with a boat when it contains cargo. Saves many many empty boat sailing time.

After reading this I get the impression you haven't tried out the harpoon?

You can turn on PvP and physically drag the wolf with it over some pretty intense obstacles, easily the railing of a longboat. I literally just got my first 2 star wolf to an ocean base for the first time 5 minutes ago haha. I had it follow me, but also tethered by harpoon the whole trip because i didn't trust the little bastard to not commit suicide by deathsqito or something.

Also you can drive a boat while having a creature tethered being towed behind you at a very managable stamina cost. Great way to import boars since they don't seem to get in the boat too gud

Another good suggestion, thanks. Totally forgot harpoon even exists - hadn't been able to make one yet in any of my games since I restarted so many times.

Have not yet encountered the leviathan - island thing in ocean to get the barnacles yet. Hopefully one one randomly and try out the harpoon

Why do you have to turn on pvp though? Does it not work on tame creatures if pvp is off?

Thanks for the ideas. I'm just about to try this.

I just got finished building my temporary wolf pen, taming a pair of wolves and started them breeding when I got hunted! I don't think I'm going to need to farm them for a while:

35 wolves in a matter of a couple of minutes. Thank Odin I have good armor and the Bonemass ability!

since hearth and home you can't damage your tamed animals unless you enable pvp or use the new butcher knife

Well. This is going to be harder than was advertised in the brochure!

I decided to take 4 wolves on the journey and leave two behind (just in case). I lead the four followers out the door, and they almost immediately get killed by drake.

I have to lead them across quite a bit of mountain and a bit of plains to get them to water. I already cleared the village in the plains, but drake are everywhere, so I either have to be quicker on the bow or breed some closer to my base/water.

Edit: Going down the other side of the mountain is much shorter and ends in meadows, so I think I'll try that. I just have to trudge the boat parts over the mountain to the other side of the continent, sail it around, or build a new one.

The sailing is also much longer due to the layout of the land masses, but I'll deal with that when I get to it. :-)

I do enjoy being challenged again. Next up lox migration!

Holy #$%@. Took out the next batch. No problems until I reached the steep slope down to the boat. Of course, all I could do was slide down the slope. Got to the bottom and the wolves were nowhere to be seen. Found 6 drakes and a stone golem looking for them, but no remains, so I don't know what happened to them... RIP #2.

I think I got really lucky finding wolves in snow area that had zero drake spawns. The regular wolves I got on starter island on very small mountain biome - so small no silver or obsidian but easy wolves.

Only 1 star wolf found was also in a small mountain with no drake spawns.

it wasn't before H&H because hitting the boat would usually also hit some of the animals on it. Now destroying the boat should work fine since tamed animals don't take "friendly fire" damage, just always remember to do it shallow water so you don't lose the mats for the boat.

Got two wolves loaded onto a longboat and made it back to base with one of them. The other died from a sea monster. I'm not sure exactly how or why. It seemed like it hit him and drug him off the boat.

Also lost several pup. I thought the wolves were getting injured at first, then I realized that it was pups being born on a moving boat and (I assume) staying in place. I had a similar problem the first time I tried to push off the boat and realized that "stay" was relative to the land, not the boat!

I did learn another way to get the wolf off the boat. I saw a boar nearby where I landed and agroed him toward me and the wolf (on the boat near me). The wolf jumped off the boat and killed the boar along with a couple of pesky neaks.

I'll probably try another trip with a few more and hopefully get at least one more back.

Oh, this time I tamed a new pair of wolves on a much smaller mountain without drakes, and I also built a shack next to the boat and escorted the wolves one at a time, just in case. The mountain is next to plains, and I saw a couple of fulings, but they were not a problem.

yeah wolves dont got jack for health and armor, they just have really strong damage output. nothing is more heart crushing than them aggroing on something beefy like a golem to which they dont stand a chance and they get crushed...
