I don't think your proxy server or steam or opera had anything to do with your trouble.
/mild rant
The developers have a strong idea (I Guess) that people want to play this game like a "roguelike" where you're going to just accept all the bad things that happen to you.
Meanwhile 95% of the players who still pay attention to Valheim look at it like a minecraft survival game (because the twitch.tv streams like to build cute viking towns) and it's "cute" when inept players with the right looks struggle through. Eventually the devs will catch up to this and the game will improve or die on the vine like every other independent game that went the cute twitch.tv route.
You just found out that the developers aren't building the game the way you thought they were. That's OK just now because if you're on PC you can just at any time copy your savegames and reload them. Your barley and flax are long gone, but whoa, you can recreate them with commands. Google it. Console players can't do this (usually). Maybe someday the game will work the way you expected and you'll be able to just save and load as you see fit, but right now that requires 1: a PC and 2: willingness to put in the tiny effort of saving/copying files
Are you running any mods?
Hit F5 and type save if you are having synch issues before logging out to force manual save.
turns out that the flax goes green if not getting enough sun, then dies , well disappears.
I made this post thinking it may be something like this, but started blaming myself with proxy server issues with steam client.
ie if i had been using a browser, usually watching eso's builds on you tube, the browser turns on the proxy server which prevents steam from loading up.
if during the game, i chose to watch esos build eg the one on top of a tall rock in the plains biome, then the proxy gets turned on again, which i suspect causes the syncing failure with steam if i close the game then steam to go to sleep or what ever.
the flax and barley were planted under the floor way way above the ground on this rock so sun does get to the plants but the game must only consider 90 degrees straight up like it does with rain so even if you see sun on the plant if it is directly under your building no matter the height it counts as blocking the sky.
Thanks for the useful feedback. Many folks would figure it out and never spread the word.
And thanks to Frostbringer for actually trying to help without editorial content
