Turnips are generally better than carrots, and onions are better than turnips. I use plenty of turnips for black soup personally.
As far as finding them, I just got lucky in a swamp biome, but in hindsight they don't seem very common and I haven't seen a lot of them in the 3-4 swamps I've found so far.
I forgot about black soup. By the time I got some turnip seeds and had enough to use, I had moved on to onions.
I haven't progressed far enough to unlock more recipes for onions than just onion soup, which, like carrot turnip soup is a stamina food, but the upside to black soup is that it's a health food. I would assume onions are used in a health food recipe at some point too, but black soup's ingredients are just so easy to get in large volumes. I know I'll phase out the turnips eventually, but they definitely have their use at this specific point in the game for both health-focused and stamina-focused recipes.
Bonemass has always been a long trip away too, so it has happened naturally that I tend to find turnip seeds in the same swamp as Bonemass, if I haven't found the seeds earlier.
Never seen an actual turnip in the wild. I thought you had to pick flowers and plant the seeds first.
