Creating new skins?

There's a ton of skins you can download from others, that's not the issue.

How can I get a skin I created to attach to a mesh? Everytime I try I just end up with a white mesh and no skin in-game. What am I missing? I'm starting really simple and just tweaking one of the already existing skins for custom characters. Do I need to copy a folder or name it a certain way?

download the character tool,open a existing character,create a folder and modify the skin,reload and see by yourself

The .hero file has to point to the correct character.nif file, and the skin has to exist in the skins folder where the nif is located. Grab Alex's EZ Hero tool. Also, his FAQ answers what you are asking in great detail.
