Any chance of having armor density and even external plating be a module that comes with a variety of choices and options?
Even a centimeter of aluminum followed by a little space can neutalize large armor penetrating rounds.

But just saying, whether our options only came down to thickness (everyone uses star trek tritanium - but thickness varies) , or was more interesting by giving options both in thickness and density ( replace all my tritanium with melted down pocket change, saving some money)

My reasoning for asking is - as long as such a large and essentially definitive portion of the game is regarding the wide variety of meaningful options in customization - one can't really go wrong with even more meaningful options in terms of customization

This was tried early in testing, but we found the game works a lot better when the defensive capabilities of each hull type are static. Neb has a ton of shell types and asks the player to memorize their penetration versus the various hulls' armour thicknesses. That process is already hard enough with 14 hulls when you can look at an enemy contact and know its armour and DR will be exactly as advertised. If you could vary your armour and DR, then suddenly that goes out the window, you'd see "LIGHT CRUISER" on your screen and have no idea if you should be firing HE or AP, how many plasma hits you'll need to shred it, how close you'll need to get with a particle beam, etc.
