Loved this game until I had to hold off the German counter attack in Italy. The sniper stugs shooting at individual officers moving behind the lines were too much for me. My entire officer corps was devastated. spent the whole mission sitting in the rocks getting blasted.

For every threat in a scenario there is a counter to it.

Having said that German counterattacks can be tough to deal with. As they were in real life.

Good Hunting.

I stood my men on the reverse slope - it worked for Wellington and it works for me!
I knew an Airborne vet of D-Day who described German anti-tank artillery shooting at individual soldiers.
Just won this fight with both majors accomplished. I hid a good majority of my boys in the forestry below the hill ahead of the objectives and waited for the infantry to rush forward. If you look at where the stugs are or where they could be you can see their blind spots and put your squads there. Machine guns for me unfortunately drew fire on the hill crests but for every one gunner we lost they mowed down at least a handful of nazis before I pulled them back. Trick is to catch the infantry with their pants down running out in the open; eventually you'll find their lieutenants running around trying to rally and bolster, reward their efforts with focused fire and they'll basically be stun-locked as your boys shoot em.

Using this you can basically ensure that no matter what they get nowhere near the objectives, they won't use their tanks as battering rams (unfortunately) so their infantry will be gunned down at a rate they cannot hope to win with. Use creep a lot and remember you can also use the forestry to break LoS.

As Ahriman999 wrote, checking LoS for those tanks and staying out is quite important. LoS is very important in general.
Also, if you happen to be in LoS, the Creep action might be useful to get out and not draw OPfire.
But yeah, sometimes you take many casualties nonetheless. You will recover, but it might take some time. Very thematic imo and part of the burden. You learnt it the hard way, and next time you will likely be more careful.

I mean I get the distinct impression that the intent was for the player to disengage so if you are invested in your officers surviving I would recommend that, though I beat it by using the line of sight to keep my soldiers out of harms way and just waiting until help arrived.
