My money would be more on audio/video codecs conflicting with ones that the user has installed. This was the issue I had once in another game. At the very least I would think it's a software configuration that the game doesn't like.
i got the game free with my 7950 so not nvidia related at all lol
Here is what my shortcuts properties target line looks like.
Notice the addition of -dx9 to default entry.
"G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\BioShock Infinite\Binaries\Win32\BioShockInfinite.exe" -dx9
Here is the advice that I recieved on the Irrational Games thread from one of the Tech Support guys:

"I have gotten some feedback to suggest that at least a few of the freezes may be related to a network card, or otherwise connection related. While we look into this, you may want to try setting Steam to offline mode and see if that helps. So far as I can tell, that one is specific to the "Screen freezes, audio continues" freeze after a few minutes of play, but i could be wrong.
Nvidia users may have some luck with disabling Ambient Occlusion from the in-game graphics options. If this resolves your issues, you may want to then try re-enabling it through the Nvidia Control Panel.
ATI Users have additionally reported improved stability on the 13.3 Beta drivers. These drivers can be obtained directly from AMD.
Note: Please check that your card is compatible with this driver before installing.

To switch Steam to offline mode:
- Start Steam online - make sure the Remember my password box on the login window is checked
- Verify that all game files are completely updated - you can see the update status for a game under the Library section (when the game shows as 100% - Ready it is ready to be played in Offline Mode)
- Launch the game you would like to play offline to verify that there are no further updates to download - shut down the game and return to Steam once you have confirmed that the game can be played
- Go to Steam > Settings to ensure the Don't save account credentials on this computer option is not selected
- From the main Steam window, go to the Steam menu and select Go Offline
- Click Restart in Offline Mode to restart Steam in Offline Mode
- Launch Bioshock Infinite, and see if conditions improve
I'll try to update as we get more reported successes, but if you would like to submit a ticket, please feel free to and we can look into it a little more one on one."

I am going to try sending them a packet to see if I can get any 'one on one' help as he mentioned, otherwise its now really a waiting game until they can get a fix out for us.
Just wanted to say thanks for the community support on this so far - you all rock ;)
As of writing this now I have put roughly 2 hours into the game, not got far into the story too busy staring at the wonderful scenery, but no freezing whatsoever. I get the occasional freeze on new area loads but just momentarily.
Just to add aswell, my system is a fair few years old (ready for the laughs). Still rocking a Q6600 2.4ghz, 4ghz ram, but I upgraded my GFX from a 8800GTS OC to a 650ti OC and am able to run the game on ULTRA. Made up with that!
But to summarize I think the problem (for me anyway) lied/lies within the steam client. I will update if I have anymore issues, but so far so good!
After reading this thread, I updated to the latest NVidia drivers, and disabled ambient occlusion and haven't crashed since. Not sure which one did the trick or if it was both.
I will let you all know what my own response from 2K is however so far all those I know of who have heard back from 2K say it's an Nvidia driver (find this a little hard to swallow as there are loads of AMD peeps out there with the same problem).
Anyway - I'll keep you updated
