Elizabeth's altered haircut and dress
When Elizabeth cuts her hair and changes her dress, i wonder what is the reason behind this do that. Anyone has an idea about that?

She realizes what's happening around her and she has to adapt to it! Until Booker rescued her she was completly isolated in the "tower". But with the end of this isolation she needs to grow up fast in order to survive in the new rough environment! That's how I see it ;)

I saw it as she is now soaked in blood from your pycho murdering spree and should probably change into something less blood covered..

That's the practical side but I think that there is also a deeper meaning behind it ;)

I think it has something to do with identity and such. She killed a person for the first time and she probably felt the need to change her apperance as she herself is a "new" person. If you think about it this way you can compare it to f.ex. ancient asian cultures where cutting your hair was to show that you now were an outcast and a way to dishonor yourself. Nowadays it's more about wanting to change. That's what I thought atleast. I might also be rambling so, yeah.

Three reasons, imo. Two in-game, and one out-of-game.

In-game:

1. As mentioned above, she was a mess from killing Daisy Fitzroy and needed a change of outfit.

2. That doesn't cover her haircut though. That, also as mentioned above, showed that she felt like she was a different person emotionally now and needed show it on herself physically too. Kind of a stereotypical child growing into an adult move.

Out-of-game:

Everyone had seen Elizabeth in that fancy, cleavage-showing dress since 2010, and clearly the devs wanted to put that in the game somehow even though Elizabeth's character had changed over time, so they worked an opportunity in.

It is a symbol of how she grows as a character and a person, she becomes mature, more aware of herself and surroundings as well as much more reserved. You can say that she finally enters the first stage of becoming a women with nearing peak of her powers.

It's a symbol of her growing out of naivety. Plain and simple.

Thx for the replies guys. That's also what i though about it, but wanted the thread to start out neutral.

I understand that she changed her dress because it was all torn and dirty. I don't get why she cut her hair, seemed pointless to me.

It's sad to me that none of you refer to the tradition of cutting off your hair as a symbol of "moving on". Especially since right after she does it she asks Booker how you "forget" or "wash away the things that you've done". As in, how do you move on after what you've done. After which you notice a change in her behavior for the rest of the game. She has changed emotionally and grown as a person. Here is a link to the scene. Forgive the choppy recording. it's not mine. http://youtu.be/mr8jNo5qeHs watch and notice her subtle actions. How she speaks. What she says.
