Pre-load to different hard drive
I have an SSD which runs my main programs, but install all my games to an HDD. The pre-load won't let me choose to install to the HDD. How do i fix this so I can be ready to play at release?

Same question here, How to change the preload path?...

Same problem here...I have a nagging suspicion that valve has not yet implimented that feature. ( with changing path being a rather new feature). Luckly i could make enough room on my ssd.

A workaround Idea : move your steam games directory (...steamlibary/steamapps) to a different location. deinstall steam and install steam again on your HDD. Then move your steamapps again to the new steam directory. After a few seconds steam should recognize the installed games again.

I don´t know if this would work. Could be that steam saves it automatically on your Windows drive...Anybody else tried something like this?

I mentioned this in two other strings on the same subject. Go to this web site and download the free SteamMover program in the link I provide.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/File-managers/Steam-Mover.shtml

I have been using this for months, as have all my friends with the same issue.

This program is small but does wonders for moving your Steam Library to any other drive you wish...one game at a time. So you can pick and choose what to move and what to leave be. I have 5 Tera of drives in my computer and I have moved stuff back and forth on all 3 drives with no errors, difficulty or problems.

All DLC's, patches and add ons will hook to the new location perfectly. You can also reverse the process at anytime and just hit the arrow back to the left to have a game go back to the route drive it was first installed on.

It's real simple to use. Download it to your documents. Click on SteamMover.exe from your documents folder and set up which drive you wish to move a game to. There will be a list of all your Steam games and by clicking on a new location/drive and then hitting the arrow on that specific game to the Right...will initiate the moving of the game or program from where you had it installed to where you wish it to be. I recently added in a 3 tera drive and moved nearly all my games off of my C and D drives. They are now mostly on my new G drive. I have moved over 100 games with zero issues.

It's a small program that does wonders for freeing up that much needed space. If anyone needs more help just hit me up on chat and I will be more than happy to aid you in getting it working if you run into some sort of issue. You should have no issues though as it is very easy to navigate and use.

Hope this helps you all.

Ciao,

Thanks alot Tigershark. I'll be sure to give that a whirl when i get home. I got 30 GB free so i hope that will be enough to save until i can move it.

No problem. A buddy of mine from the clan I belong to recommened it to me a year ago. It is a fantastic little program. Everyone reading this should install it. I wish Steam had this as a feature in their settings.

I also see the game mover being good, as i can move whatever game i'm playing alot of at the time to my ssd to avoid load times, and then move it to the hdd when i'm done with it, and move on to something else. pretty nifty.

if anyone is interested, the path to the preloading file is:
[...\Program Files\Steam\depotchache\8875_depotcache_1.csd]

Steam already has option to install on different drive pitty you cant put it on standard. Go to settings downloads+cloud then click the steam library folder add a new library folder go to your other drive make a new folder and select that as path. Now when installing a game make sure you select that library while installing.

Where do you have Steam installed? I have it installed on my HDD, and the preload is loading to my HDD. (I mean of course I have a SSD, which has Windows on it and is my boot disc. I just run Steam, and most of my apps, from my HDD, and I haven't had any problems.)

I was able to tell Steam where to install Tomb Raider when I pre-loaded it.

I've noticed afew games that disallowed which drive I could install onto, including bioshock infinite. Will give the steam mover a go, thanks.

Preloads and installations of released games work differently. But strangely I could choose the library folder after I registered the Bioshock Infinite retail CD key. It did not work for me with Tomb Raider that was bought within steam though.
Anyway, you can easily move the game to the other Libraray after the game has been unlocked.
In your main library there will be a file "appmanifest_8870.acf" in the \Steam\steamapps\ folder. Move this file and the "Bioshock Infinite" Folder from \Steam\steamapps\common\ to the same folders in your 2nd library. Start steam and check the properties, it should point to the other drive now. I'm moving games this way for months now. And it works like a charm.

Got the same problem, a 120 GB SSD is just a bit too small sometimes, so i ended up just deleting the preloaded files and download them on release day
