Atlas and Fontaine
Are Atlas and Fontaine the same people? it seems that way in bioshock but then in burial at sea you see the real atlas, which makes you think it's two different people, was there a real atlas who then died and got his identity stolen by fontaine? or was atlas never real and in burial at sea it's just more retconning.

SPOILERS

Atlas and Fontaine are the same person. In Burial at Sea Episode 2, whilst playing as Elizabeth, there is an area that you can open that shows the truth behind Fontaine and Atlas, with a "Fontaine" outfit that Atlas used to wear. There is also a voxophone (I can't remember what they're called in Rapture haha) in the room that explains it I believe. I can't remember what it said but it was definately on that topic. But then obviously, Fontaine, Atlas, turns into some ADAM freak that Jack kills with the help of the Little Sisters in Bioshock 1. It's nice how it all ties together if you ask me.

As the above poster said Atlas and Fontaine are and always have been the same person. What led you to believe that Atlas was a real, separate person?

Yes I've played it through myself. Please elaborate.

Atlas seems to be very real indeed.

Well Fontaine is a master of disguise. I still don't see what evidence there is to support what you're saying.
Atlas in Burial at Sea episode 2 looks just about the same as the audio log image of Atlas in the original BioShock.

Atlas has always been an alias of Fontaine. There was no "real" Atlas. Fontaine faked his death and disquised himself so he wouldn't be recognized and went by the name Atlas.

I can see how someone could make the mistake of thinking Atlas and Fontaine were different people if they had never played BS1, But there are enough clues to find out they are one in the same.

Atlas = Fontaine.

Fontaine is Atlas. The book explains this really well. He changes who he is constantly. He murdered a fisherman Named Frank Fontaine and took his idenity so he could find out what Ryan was building in the ocean. Always looking for more money and power.

You didn't do everything in Burial at Sea 2 then if you still think they're separate people. As Tobes mentioned above, in the secret room behind the three bottles (which you can enter after collecting the four secret messages), you discover Fontaine's dressing room with his wigs and such. Elizabeth then comments about how Atlas and Fontaine are the same person.

Don't forget about when his accent slipped during the lobotomy scene.

Playing through BioShock 1 will help with this
POTENTIAL SPOLIERS
In BioShock 1, Fontaine states that he was multiple people, at multiple times. He was once a chinese man living in Rapture, and then he was Atlas, and then he was Fontaine again. Adam can change a mans apperance, his voice and everything about him. If you haven't played BS 1, I'd recommend you do. Clears up any problems with BAS:EP 2.

Fontaine was a fisherman that Frank killed and stole the identity of on the way to rapture. Atlas was a personna that Frank then undertook, and faked the death of his Fontaine personality.

Basically, the guy who talks to us in the game goes by the name of Frank Fontaine and Atlas, but his real name is unknown.

The use of Adam has nothing to do with Fontaine's appearance. He just adopted a new accent and wore a wig and appropriate clothes to become Atlas.

According to the wiki, which sources it from the book, Fontaine was born with the name Frank, but his surname was unknown.
