"Unknown read/write error"
Hi, I am really looking forward to playing this game yet whenever I get up to an autosave, the game tabs out to a popup saying that there was an "Unknown read/write error." The game doesn't crash but the autosave doesn't appear to work either. I've tried reinstalling the game, verifying game files, putting the game on another drive, turning off read only for steam, and running steam as administrator but none of these do the trick. Can someone help me with this? I had no issues with BioShock 1 or 2.

Just to be clear: You set steam to RO and then wonder why a game doesn't let you write a file. Honestly. :-)

Because in this game, the save isn't under My Games or even the Bioshock Infinite tree in steamapps, it's under userdata beneath your Steam install... doesn't matter where you installed the game files to...

You should definitely double-check your permissions on that tree, IIRC the appmanifest states that 8870 is Bioshock Infinite... I don't know what you've done, but you'll be able to find it, the default would have been something like C:\Program Files\Steam\userdata\<your_steam_id>\8870

Besides, in general, why in the hell would you make the steam tree RO? If any file gets corrupted, the integrity checker can't fix the files.

Other way, I turned off RO, I don't think it was ever on but I did anyway. I did the same thing for the 8870 folder already too.

Ahh, sorry it reads the other way... hmm. what if you move any existing save somewhere and delete the whole 8870 tree, and then start the game, let it recreate it, start a new game, then play til an autosave writes, see if that resolves it?

A lot of people have had this before, but from your post I know you already searched and tried the obvious ones, I will try to not repeat those suggestions...

edit: oh, really dumb Q: how is your free space on the drive the save writes to? adequate?

Ill give that a shot right now, I have 500gbs of free space on that drive.

No luck, I think there is an autosave once you reach the bells outside the lighthouse, that save works fine after clearing save files, but every save after that has the issue.

hmm so it lets one write go fine, but not any subsequent ones? Oof. Frustrating. OK.

You didn't mention this, try disabling saving to steam cloud?

That doesn't work unfortunately

check your antivirus logs? might be blocking steam/game.

also check windows security/controlled folder access. if on add exceptions for steam/game.

might check windows event viewer. might be related error eventid.

also might check reliability monitor. in windows search run
perfmon /rel
the red x's and yellow!'s might be related issues.

Ok I booted up the game and it got past one checkpoint but the next checkpoint after the baptism it happened. I have no antivirus, controlled folder access is turned off.

Event viewer says "Error -1023 occurred while opening logfile C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\appdata\local\titledatalayer\database\EDB.log

reliability monitor only has a red X that says Background Task Host - Stopped working, but this is before I even boot the game.

I have that event viewer error. game still saves.
so I have win 10, windows antivirus on, controlled folder access off. game saves.
I have a local pc account and NOT a microsoft login. make a local pc account and see if the game saves.

Hi i just found a solution when you go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\XXXX\8870\remote you need to right click the remote folder go to the properties and in the security tab you need to edit it so it can write in the folder since its only allowing the folders to be read
