Edit: I regret making this post. It was a knee jerk reaction to the game's political content. I hope this post is utterly forgotten.

Please do not DM me over this post. I made it 9 years ago during the height of the game's popularity after a rough election. I have emotionally matured and realize that this does nothing but stir the pot.. and that's not what one should strive to do. I was in my early 20s and not that bright.

All of these games are about how extreme forms of governments which only adhere to one philosophy are doomed to fail.

BS1: Extreme capitalism and individualism caused Andrew Ryan to lose control over his city and people which led to the civil war.

BS2: The collectivist society of Sophia Lamb wasn't helping Rapture either but more or less keeping it down.

BSI: Extreme nationalism etc. caused a social revolution. (But then again the Vox are just as bad and prejudiced as their previous rulers).

That was some of it. But even if Ryan had followed his ideals, Rapture was still screwed because Ryan's ideals don't work. They are too extream and ignore human nature. sm

I think it is explained in the audio tapes that Andrew Ryan let Fontaine grow into such a massive power that rivalled his own because of his beliefs. Only after he realized that Fontaine is threatening to destroy Rapture as he built it did he betray his ideals but by that time it was too late. If Andrew Ryan let go of his beliefs earlier Rapture would be fine er well maybe a bit better off.

It was more like Ryan made contact with the surface illegal. And if you wanted something from the surface you had to have it smuggled in. This is what got Fontaine's foot in the door to start making a lot of money quickly. Now if Ryan had a decent sized police force he probably would have been able to shut down Fontaine legaly. But Ryan didn't want that (It was "Big Government") so Fontaine's power grew and Ryan let his dictator side show to take him down. But if it hadn't been Fontaine it would have been someone else. Rapture's extream Social Darwinism (and that's what it is) meant that the rich were going to stay on top and would use their money and power to stay on top no matter what the rules were. Sooner or later civil war would have broken out because of how flawed the basic system was. Fontaine was a symptom of the problem, not the problem itself. sm
