I've had the exact same problem before, with the exact same specifications. Lowering the graphics worked for me.

Ok, I'll try this in a bit. Once you work out which graphics setting it is that causes it post it here, also once you pass the bit with the rivet gun can you then up the graphics settings?

So I lowered the settings and entered into the room and it did not crash. While I was in the room I tried to raise all the settings back up and as soon as it set them the game crashed.

Bingo! I've worked it out. I went through all the settings systematically and the only one that made then crash was setting the texture detail to high. With everything else on and actor detail on high but texture detail on medium, no crash. As soon as i turned on texture detail to high 2 seconds in and it crashes! Problem solved (for now). I'll keep you updated, winduck still go through with your tests and see if it is the same for you. Derpfish what graphics card are you running because I have a ATI 7850 and winduck also has a ATI card maybe it is a problem with ATI cards? EDIT: Running the game with medium textures makes it look awful truely awful you cannot make out words on signs and such. However if you edit the launch options through steam and put it into dx9 mode by putting in "-dx9" you can run it on high textures but without the dx10 stuff the game looks a lot better and hasn't crashed yet.

Now, I know this is a pretty old discussion, but have you tried to verify the integrity of the game cache? I was having the same problems when I got the rivet gun, then I found out when verifying there were more than 70 errors, or about 150 Mb of files that were missed in the initial installment. I believe doing this will allow you to play at max settings and have the direct x 10 goodness.

I had this same issue (only it started crashing on the Fontain Futuristics level). Either lowering the texture to medium instead of high or using dx9 "solves" the issue.

Hate to necro an old thread, but for anyone who may be still experiencing this...

I managed to get past this without lowering any graphics settings or doing any sort of text edits in the .ini or whatever.

Real simple...

-I ran into the room, quickly shot the 2 splicers in there and quick saved before the game could crash.

-Once it did crash (within seconds), I reopened that quick save and was crash free from there on out.

Obviously, make a non quick save save file before trying this. I also do not know if the 2 splicers have to be killed or if you can quick save immediately after picking up the rivet gun and entering the room.

Cheers.

Seems to have worked. Odd bug.

Yep, worked for me. But now the game looks very low quality (i.e art etc. Looks way to out of focus). I can handle the poor npc texture, but the art is a part of the game.

Once you get through i think you can just change the texture on the fly.

I know this thread is ten years old, but surprisingly what /\/\utt0 said to do actually worked! I didn't have to change any of my settings.
