I loved bioshock 1. Bioshock 2 was fun, gameplay wise, but infinite is just on a level of its own. I think Bioshock 1 is alot of peoples favorites because it was pretty innovative at the time. I can definitely understand that. However I do believe infinite surpasses it in many ways. Its late or I would go into more detail.
You may need many late nights to discuss (argue) that here cos many, including myself, would strongly disagree. In fact I would go so far as to say Infinite is a Bioshock game in name only.
Not that it's a bad game, just way way way overated.
Like you I'm not going to go into detail, but mainly becuase I'm too lazy.

There's a good video comparison.
Infinite have a very good history and a gorgeus world, but their combat mechanis wasn´t good, maybe it´s because they showed us some battles or actions that never could be done in the final version.
But even with this, Infinite shine thanks to Elizabeth, a character that at the end you really care about.
infinite was disapointing on many levels and i don't really consider it a full bioshock game. it lacks everything stylistically that made the first games so incredible for me - columbia is devoid of the life and sense of functionality that rapture had, and the "social issues" presented (racism, rebellion, class warfare..) are so superficially analyzed it almost enters the realm of parody. even important characters - fitzroy, comstock, the luteces - were little more than personified plot devices. i think the last 20 minutes were incredible, and i enjoyed discussion surrounding the game afterwards, but that alone cannot save the first 10 hours of mediocrity. i rarely like to call something overhyped, but i think it fits here.
My favorite though is the first one. The plot twist that is shown at the near end of the game, the how it is shown and the breadcrumbs that lead to it (the recordings) I believe are just awesome.
It is a tough fight with Infinite since Elizabeth is a very well made character that just grows on you... maybe if Infinite hadn't been the guided story that it is it would've been my favorite. That's where many people simply hit a wall with Infinite and say it is an overhyped game simply because it is not what they were expecting and refusing to see how good it actually is.
I believe the first Bioshock is the best for me - when it came out I really liked it as I found it very new, very innovative. Also, at some point I felt it was better to play a common human being as opposed to the Big Daddy in the sequel. I know it was not a real Big Daddy, but still... Anyways, the 2nd was also really good as there were some improvements, mainly gameplay-wise (wireless hacking - > darts) and the plasmids were better if upgraded.
Infinite was very different... on the other hand, I clearly saw it was made by the same people (same attention to details). I missed the splicers and the horror elements that came along with the first two and storywise I saw they tried to be a bit more innovative but by the end of the game I had more questions than answers.
I agree that Infinite is a BioShock game by name only. It doesn't feel like BioShock at all, it rather feels more like Dishonored. Overall I liked Infinite. As a stand-alone game I thought it was really good. As a BioShock game I thought it was kind of lacking. The only thing I thoroughly enjoyed was the extreme plot twist right at the end that I did not see coming.
If I was allowed to choose from any of the Shock series.
