screen goes black but the game still works

Hi, i am having an issue that when i enter into the east side of the police station to go to the observation room the game goes black just as i leave the staircase. the game is still running the background though with markers working and the menu active. I can also hear sound and fire my gun. When i try to reload, the issue remains starting me back at the autosave in the generator room. I have also found when i go to the main menu the graphics are not working there either.

I have tried shutting down the game and reloading but the error starts again at the staircase. ive also reduced the graphics by half but not working. I have completed the game 3 times and this is my 4th playthrough so not sure why it started now.

PC specs:

Nvidia 1080 GTX
Intel core i7 6700
32 GB of ram

Do you mean when you using the crank to open the shutters, run downstairs to those 2 rooms where the licker Jumps through the window?

It´s my third run now (Leon B), if i use the crank to go downstairs, straight passing Chief irons room, then leaving the direction to observation rooms the screen doesnt turn black, but it freezes. I can shoot etc too and hear menu sounds, but still not able to play anymore.

Experiencing this same exact problem. I cannot seem to progress past this point. Same exact issue happens at the start of the game when I examine the laptop in the mainhall. Happened in the demo as well.

Just got the club key, run past Mr. X. Then down the stairs, see zombie moan behind barricade, bam screen goes black.

Maybe a Nvidia-Driver Problem? As you can see we all use Nvidida-Cards

i've noticed us Nvidia users are having a lot of issues with the game. Surprised Nvidia did not send out a driver update yet. The only fix i can find so far is do turn UseVendorExtention=Enable in the .ini to UseVendorExtention=Disable but in return it turns off your HDR sadly... Also had that issue when i viewed the laptop in front of the police station.

As the user above said, here is the fix:

Go into the config file in the installation directory and change "UseVendorExtensions" to disable. This is a guaranteed fix for the black screen problem, but it will disable HDR mode.

Ok, for me it is working. So worth a try for everyone, who have the same issues.

Glad it fixed it for you as well. We need an actual fix though. This having to tweak things to play it is terrible.

Sadly, Even AMD got an driver update for the game. Unsure what Nvidia is doing.

This was happening for me too, exactly as described. Right at the bottom of the staircase in the East wing, after seeing the tyrant and going down the stairs to the bottom where the zombie is trying to get through the boards. The whole screen goes black, but the menu still works and I can still hear sounds. Exiting the game to the main menu causes the backgrounds to not load. This was repeatable.

The file I changed was called "re2_config.ini" and I edited the file to include "UseVendorExtention=Disable" It was found in "Steam\steamapps\common\RESIDENT EVIL 2 BIOHAZARD RE2" After making the change and reloading the game, I was able to make it to that point without issues. This fix worked for me as well, thank you!

I guess I have solved the problem.. But it could be only in my case as I'm using a gaming monitor.. The dark screen use to happen with both Re2 and Re7bio .. go to Nvidia control panel settings .. go to > Setup G - SYNC on the left pane.. then select the radio button > Enable for window and full screen mode. APPLY THE SETTINGS AND PROBLEM SOLVED

No longer I get the black screen issues. Hope this help guys

Confirmed this works. I was having the issue with the RE2 Demo from Steam in the exact spot when first starting the game and accessing the security computer..

You need to edit the re2_config.ini in the RE2 game directory (might have to hunt for it, or just hunt for the config file) and make the changes as in quoted section above. I'm not sure what I'm missing but it seems fine.
