RE2 remake is true survival horror
I prefer the dark, atmospheric, foreboding experience of methodically exploring the dilapidated police station and sewers. Are we ever going to get back to that in future RE instalments? Or has the action horror style of the RE4 remake rendered it obsolete?

According to wikipedia, RE2R sold 11.2 million copies as of Jan 2023, but it looks like RE4R will easily surpass that if it hasn't already. Why can't we have nice things?

You got it in RE7 but it was so scary for most players, or at least too much in that direction, they made RE8 less horrific, creepy (there are still a few parts that are pretty good from an horrific perspective). That said you need to say Resident Evil as trilogies. (0 even if it launched later)/1/2/3, 4/5/6, 7/8/9 (even if we are waiting for 9).

RE2 is far more credible than RE7 to be honest.

I liked both games, but RE7 is just way too exagerated and cliché sometimes, I liked the Texas Chainsaw Massacre tribute they did with the family, but the ultraviolent torture porn was both forced and unnecessary.

The little-girl-you-see-in-every-modern-japanese-horror-flick was bland too.

RE2 approach is just way more simple, yet visceral. A third of the game is just a tribute to The Terminator chasing you in a police station where everyone's dead, but it doesn't go too far, it's the right spot, they handled the horror really well overall.

Well, while R4 was a departure from horror to... whatever that was, it was still a well regarded game. Resident evil 5 and 6? Not so much. Would be nice if they remake 5 and 6 in a more horror oriented style, but i doubt they bother with a complete overhaul.

And for those wondering about about Code Veronica, while it was critical success, not so much in sales. Less likely to get a remake, not helped by the lack of number...

I have hopes they remake Dino Crisis that way

Agreed. I love the simplistic and visceral approach to horror in RE2R. I keep returning to it, but I'm hoping Capcom will revisit that style at some point in the future, but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

Interesting notion. I've never been into Dino Crisis, but I'd certainly take a look if they went in this direction.

I enjoy RE4R quite a bit, but it can't measure up to the masterfully oppressive experience of RE2R.

Dino Crisis had a similar journey to RE in a way, where the first game was survival horror and the following ones were arcade action.

Either way I know what you mean and have hopes they won't abandon this approach

RE4 original sucked, RE4 Remake is a bit better but overall still a poor Resident Evil game full of action and minimal horror.

Action games are everywhere. I don't know why Resident Evil needs to be that.

Seldom do I encounter RE fans who dislike RE4. It does seem strange that a horror franchise embraces "anti horror tropes" in spite of itself. Maybe the next RE game will be real time strategy or racing simulator. But don't tell Capcom because they might actually do it.

It's a very divisive game. I hated it when it came out - but not because it's a bad game, but precisely because it completely betrayed the horror roots of the franchise.

Besides, it was 2005. That year and the one before we had GTA Sand Andreas, Halo 2, Half-Life 2, Far Cry, Battlefield 2... None of these are comparable to RE4 of course, but the point is that we had no shortage of action games.
Even stranger was the fact that Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. were two first person shooters that were better horror games than the newest Resident Evil, which just sounded insane.

After many years I was able to enjoy RE4 for what it is, knowing that we have REmake 2 and RE7.

Well, both F.E.A.R. and Doom 3 were intended as an action horror experience, while RE4 was obviously not. At best, it was comedy horror. I liked it from the begining, but it should have been a spin-off, not a numbered one. It also, and unfortunately, opened the door for 5 and six, which were mostly arcade shooters meant to be laugh about with a friend.

I can relate to this as a fan of Dead Space. I don't understand why Dead Space 2 is considered 'the best' of the franchise because it betrayed its survival horror roots and is inferior to the original in every way. I have since come to appreciate it for what it is, but its vastly overrated. Many people call it a "perfect masterpiece" which it is not.
