NOOOOOO!!! YOU MONSTER!!!

Just joking.

I mean, i started with the original RE2, barely played 1, and never felt i missed anything important. You may want to read the plot of the first, if you really feel like it.

Yes. This is a great entry point for new players

I'd say so. I started with RE2 original also, that was my introduction to the series (and still my favorite). I'd still recommend picking up RE1 on Steam, it's fantastic. 0 is good too but a bit more clunky with controlling two characters and the story feels more campy/cheesy to me than 1, but it's Resident Evil, they all kind of are in their own way.
I was in the same boat as you and imagine that the majority of people starting with any game that has multiple series, ask the same question. I would personally recommend to play this and just read/watch what happened on the previous parts. I personally bought them to see if I'd like them (never played them previously) and to my own disappointment, as far as I wanted to prove myself otherwise, I did not like the game mechanics of the game (old school, I guess I'm not that old yet).

If you're from the group of people who are in it for the story/plot - watch the previous summaries of the games. If you're about that 'gaming' with old school mechanics - start from RE1.

To answer your question: You might have some questions as to why's that or who's that, but not in a way as to not enjoy the journey that you start with RE2.

As someone who started with the PS1 version of RE2?

Start where ever you like.

The games are packed with retcons anyway.

Right, half the time they don't even follow their own canon. It basically comes down to just enjoying the gameplay for most of these games. They are usually built to be replayed multiple times. Most of the stories are decent and fun but Capcom basically never follows their own canon in these games with all the retcons like you stated.

You can if you don't like Tank Controls. You'll miss some context, but it could work in your favor as "not understanding much why", which isn't a sensation that kills the uncertainty of the horror games. Plus, wikias exist now if you want to learn more about storylines.

yep. 1 and 0 suck. This is the best game to start with. You can watch the stories for those games on youtube in about 5 minutes.

No, but do end it with 6, because after that, it got turned into some kind of Rob Zombie torture porn crap.

Start with 0, get on with it.

Please don't recommend anyone to play 6. That's a war crime.

Disagree on 1, specially with the remake. 0 was indeed underwhelming.

skipping RE0 is always a good idea. Never skip 1 though.

okay

0 isn't bad. It's just kinda jank because of the two person system and the fact there's no item box.

It still plays fine for a fixed camera RE game.
