Buy don't be afraid to experiment yourself. My 1st playthrough I used to pack all the weapons and no shame in that.
Item management can only be optimized if you know beforehand what your character will face.
For Claire i recommend keeping her SLS 60 and her MQ 11 for most of the game. The grenade launcher is good for lickers and bosses, especially using the Acid rounds on G. The spark shot is cool but it takes too long to kill enemies in a pinch and is best saved for bullet sponge enemies like Lickers and smaller "G"s.
Leon's shotgun, without any additional upgrades, takes up little inventory space, but you'll have to take risks to kill zombies with a headshot because it's effective at very close range.
It's the same with Claire's submachine gun.
Later in the game, new weapons will appear that work better for certain enemies/bosses.
But you definitely shouldn’t carry all the weapons in your inventory.
