When he showed up right away in RE2 Remake it was a bit shocking at first but it lead me to think there was some sort of even bigger surprise waiting for the next play through which sadly didn't really happen. They should have just reserved him for the second and future play throughs.
Nah, feel free to do whatever you want. I found mr. X good enough and not as annoying as RE3 tyrant who was fast and worked all arround the somewhat sloppy dodge mechanic.
This was an effective way to also upgrade your ammo. Using 9mm on him in certain fights for him to drop better ammo even Magnum if I recall right. It was a neat and helpful trick.
Like you said he's not a threat by himself but rather a disruptor made to make you panic and run into the proper dangers like zombies and lickers.
His threat level isn't really what most (if any) people here are complaining about. They find him tedious. While I don't think of him that way personally it's understandable why others would. There is no right answer to whether Mr.X is a positive or negative to this game it's all just opinion.
I'd say he's more of a positive. I can think of many occasions which he caused extremely stressful (in a good way) or scary moments for me.
I think the complaints about Mr.X are doing a similar thing. Nemesis in REmake3 is dumbed down, and Lady D is the easiest pursuer enemy of them all
If the feedback alone really lead up to those changes then it was obviously it was large enough for Capcom to listen and try to adjust. Which despite anyone's personal feelings is a positive thing when company at-least tries to adjust their future products based on common consumer feedback.
Hence the need for a franchise reboot after RE6.
Dead Space 3 is a very different story though. Coop was completely optional and was the major actual game-play change that was actually meant to improve game-play. The grinding to push Micros transactions is what really hurt that game but this was done to purposefully kneecap the game-play in attempts to gain more profits though the mt sales.
Changing the behaviors of the chasing you baddies is nothing compared to what EA did there. As for RE6 it's been obvious the push to a more action based RE produced more success over time. RE4 for example makes Leon such an action hero that he can literally kick half of an infected town to death and this game was an amazing success. RE5 introduced coop and became even more action heavy then RE4 and it outsold RE4. Looking at RE6 specifically despite not doing as well as RE5 in terms of sales it too sold better than RE4 by almost a million units. RE6 isn't the failure vocal critics claim it is. But being the second highest seller in the franchise is nothing to scoff at.
Steam reviews are Very positve overall,

Let's not forget the vocal minority did the same to 4 and 5.
