So WTAF (what the actual ♥♥♥♥) is the exclamation mark mean in the chess puzzle room?
You know, that one in a safe room where we plug them in order to open one door that leads to garbage room (not the one with flamethrower). I solved the puzzle, but the exclamation mark is still there. Any idea? its usually there when a door or a locker or a safe is still locked.

It's likely that the devs figured that if they marked that puzzle as complete on the map it could give the false impression that, like every other puzzle once solved, you could not interact with it anymore, and lead to people not noticing they can pick the pieces back up for the flamethrower and lowering the bridge if they needed to later on.

doesnt make sense.

if you left any item behind, the room will be shown in red in the map.
if someone realize they need to take the flamethrower in the supply storage or in the area behind the bridge, they will check the chess pieces to see if they can take them again.
no need to check them again anyway, when if you do the chess puzzle, you know you can take them out after completing the puzzle.
Basically don't need to do whatever you said above

It's red because you can still take the plugs out of the slots. As Ameto said above, its so that you can go back for the flamethrower/spark shot if, for some reason, you left it there.

Cause you left quest times behind, the chess pieces. However, you ARE supposed to leave them behind because that's how the puzzle is solved. Maybe it's just something the developers didn't pay attention to and thought that it wasn't a big deal.

Usually quest items are used then removed "deleted" or stored, when you're done with them there'd be a check mark in item icon. The only exception are the chess pieces I believe. You don't delete them, or store them, you just leave them there. This is unique to this puzzle. This is why it acts differently, probably.

I already know about that checkmark thing on the lower right corner of a used item, not sure why you are telling me that.

I didn't ask about the non-existent checkmark on chess pieces, what I asked is why there is an exclamation mark in the puzzle room
