I'm quite against arbitrary plot changes that could potentially screw the series timeline even more, but in this case this change does actually make things more convincing without breaking anything.
Me too. I played through Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 at least 10 times each in the 90's when they released (seriously, I loved those games so much) and I didn't hear about Leon's break up think until around 3 days ago in a Youtube video.
But maybe Capcom are trying to clean up the general story arc of the Resident Evil franchise.
I don't know if any of you have noticed but after RE3 the story got really, really, really, ridiculously stupid. The first 3 games were somewhat believable science fiction (it's not totally unbelievable for a virus to turn people into zombies and it's not totally unbelievable that an outrageously rich corporation with military ties would try to weaponize it).
Then after 3 it gets stupid, with Wesker becoming a teleporting comic book villain with red eyes, Chris punching boulders into lava and whatnot...
I remember clearly playing the original RE2 that when Racoon city outbreak happens, it's supposed to be his first day. Leon is a choir boy he wouldnt "get drunk and lose his girlfriend" and above all miss his first day due to so shameful behavior lmao.
I actually like the horrible irony of this. Being the first day means he survived because had he started earlier he would have been killed inside Raccoon city like all other officers who initially had to face the zombies.
I don't think he got drunk and lost his girlfriend, I think he got drunk BECAUSE he lost his girlfriend.
It was never explained in the game, but it's in the Biohazard 2 Official Guide Book:

Q6. Why was Leon wearing the Raccoon police uniform before he arrived at his post?
A6. I'll tell you about Leon before he came to Raccoon City...
Recently bizarre incidents have been occurring in Raccoon, a country town unfamiliar with such bizarre cases; Leon graduated from the police academy and with his strong sense of justice, he was very interested in them and immediately decided to be assigned to the Raccoon Police Department.
Needless to say, he was to be assigned to such service starting from the morning that day, but when he was leaving the place where he had lived until then, he broke up with his girlfriend and a great uproar happened from the separation, so his move became overdue (they seem to have finally separated in the end...).
Eventually, while his new address had yet to be decided, Leon drove to Raccoon City all through the night the day before he was to assume his post. However, along the way at a motel, Leon was rowdy and began drinking. He got helplessly drunk and by the time he woke up it was already the early afternoon! (He seems irresponsible, but you could say what disturbs his mind is Leon's faithfulness to women)
Leon panicked, ran out and also attempted to communicate with the Raccoon Police Department several times along the way, but there was no response.
"At this rate I'll reach Raccoon in the middle of the night... Oh well, if I'm late, it'll be the same night and day till I'm there."
Leon drove his car over the rhythm in tune with his favorite music playing from the car stereo. The highway extended straight ahead eerily rising in the setting sun's illumination, and the crimson Arklay Mountains towered...
...Basically he changed into the uniform he was supplied in the motel.
I dont agree with it but neither do i agree to arbitraily changing lore either. I think this is probably a chnge for the better tho
Might be in "official guidebook" but original game shows absolutely no indication of that so I call it ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
He's a 20-year old man. 20-year old men don't get cynical about women because their girlfriend broke up with them. They IMMEDIATELY begin hunting for a new one.
Also we all played/watched Leon pine after Ada for TWO DECADES
Male nature didn't change between 1998 and now. It is forever constant. If you're 20 and male you want it 3 times a day. Getting dumped by a girlfriend does not change this.
Maybe if Leon was 30 he would be cynical about women like I now am, and maybe he wouldn't become Ada's lapdog. But at 20? Nah.
