But yes, in the original it did look like she died.
Your saying it's more believable that she survived falling into a bottomless pit than just getting slammed pretty hard against a computer console by Mr. X? This was one of the biggest reasons I always felt Claire A/Leon B made more sense. I'm guessing the remake devs just felt the whole Leon holding Ada over a pit thing was more dramatic. And I guess they are right.
