No Heart Key stuck in Chiefs office

So I know how to get the key but i'm already in the office and I can only see one way out which is through the Chiefs office door with the heart key, but the only problem is that I don't have the key because I forgot to grab it. But now I don't know any way to get back to the police station.

Are you really in the Chief's office (with the stuffed tiger), or are you in the room in front of the elevator in the parking lot?
The Heart Key should be in the Chief's office, hidden in a portrait at the end of the last of the three rooms (the one with the electrical parts puzzle).

i'm in the Chief's office, and what do you mean the key is in his room? are you talking about the locked picture that you need the heart key to open?

Did you examine the portrait? The key is embedded in it.

You really should make a habit of that, there's a few items that are considered key items because they hold the key item inside of them like the staff you get from the statue contains the red gem used to unlock another key item that contains a key item that unlocks a weapon and an upgrade for said weapon.

I made this mistake by not examining items by pressing the space bar.
It's easily missed if you're new to the game.
