What is shield icon at the bottom right?

After you use healing items there's a shield icon on the botton right. Does it mean we temporary take less damage or something?

It is some kind of buff, like damage resistance or bonus health, not entirely sure.

It is damage resistance... As far as I understand. With it needed 5 bites instead of 3 as Claire to die.
