Audio settings for 7.1 headphones?
Can't seem to find the proper setting for my HyperX Cloud 2 headphones. They support a 7.1 setting right on their external sound card panel but I'm not sure which settings are the best.

From the testing I've done the best 2 are:
1) Ingame device: 7.1
Realtime Binaural off
Headphone 7.1 card on

2) Ingame device: Headphones
Realtime Binaural on
Headphone 7.1 card off

Enabling both realtime binaural and 7.1 with headphone 7.1 setting seems to just make all sounds seem like they surround me, but I'm not sure of the settings I've found are perfect either.

Anyone else did some tests with similar hardware?

Is there a thing as 7.1 headphones? Don't headphones have only two audio channels?
Are 7.1 headphones any good?

The ones I'm using are great, I love them. It's simulated 7.1 of course and I'm not sure how exactly it works but it does in many games.

there are reak 5.1 and 2.0 with emulated 7.1 sorround sound.

to OP. I have same headset but I use 5.1 as its better for a proper sorround sound.
I would recomend to try enabling headset 7.1 and binaural setting. Worked better for me with 7.1

I'm using 7.1 as well. You may or may not get what you're looking for in this game though. However, the fact that the devs used binaural recordings (two microphones, one for each ear) kind of makes the 7.1 moot in a game like this. They do support surround sound in-game using 5.1 with the binaural audio. However, the producer, Tsuyoshi Kanda, wanted to make a game that he believed people would use headphones for. ie, playing in the dark, lights out, more gamers do it these days, don't won't to wake the neighbors, etc. While he says the in-game audio will support high end sound systems I don't believe, personally, you'll see much of a jump between 5.1 and 7.1. Even simulated you won't notice much. The camera angles, very much meant to be slightly claustrophobic, actually uses sound pin-pointing where you are looking instead of just walking sometimes.

At this point you'd be able to rock this game using a $10 pair from the Dollar Store and still be surprised at how good it sounds. It won't be $200 sound, but it would actually still be quite good for cheap headcans.

There are a few rare true 7.1 hardware surround sound headphones like the Razer Tiamat. I use the original plugged into a discrete sound card and it sounds amazing. It had mixed reviews at launch because a lot of people thought the bass was to weak. Honestly, they probably either listen to bass levels that are far more extreme than necessary or had their settings configured incorrectly/bad sound card. My sensitive hearing could play a role as well but the bass seems more than ample by far, imo. You would set it to speaker surround sound or whatever option a given software provides as if it were a speaker setup tho, rather than a headset.

Well admittedly like I said binaural headphone settings with simulated 7.1 turned off on my headset sounds astonishingly close to 7.1 ingame setting with headphone 7.1 on (binaural off though).

What settings do you prefer?

Well, I use the headset I mentioned that has true 7.1 surround sound with multiple drivers plugged into quality sound card so I just set it to speaker when I played the demo (don't have time for the actual game atm, but defi plan to get it when I do).

I have a Corsair Void and find that the headsets virtual 7.1 itself does a better job of simulating surround than stereo with binaural on.

Yep, figured as much.

That said while I found 7.1 to be better for atmosphere, turning it off, setting device settings to headphones and enabling binaural gives better orientational sound despite lacking a bit in the surround effect.
