After 2 playthroughs I realized how much I suck at the game...
...after trying 4th survivor.

I never boasted being a supreme player or anything, but I had no issues with Mr.X, was stocked on ammo and healing items and generally did not get hit except by bosses and a few zombies when I wasn't attentive or pushed my luck too hard.

But 4th survivor? I didn't even make it to the Police Station hallway. WOW.

It's a troll mode more than anything, more like a puzzle figuring out which item goes where and the right route

It's a pretty hard mode, you need to learn patterns and try those patterns resulting in a lot of fails until you can beat it.
Tofu is still the hardest for me

Well I played Mercenaries in RE3 and distinctly remember it being easier than this. Then again, the original RE2 probably was easier than the remake.

Mercenaries and Extreme Battle were designed for the player to have fun like an arcade. 4th survivor was more of a troll mode to force the player to optimize the route as perfect as possible by exploiting hitboxes and stuff to even get to the end.

Glad you said that. Everyone seems to be saying that Standard is super easy and hardcore is closest to original RE2 (I know it has ribbons and such), but my experience seems to differ... either I'm getting slow/crap as I get older (quite possible :p) or the game is more difficult than RE2 original was.

unfortunately I haven't played RE2 back in the day, but I did play the crap out of 3 and people say it's basically 2.5.

The game was definitely easier due to the absence of precision aiming and being able to relatively precisely calculate the amount of bullets needed per zombie. They also seemed easier to avoid, and a close range shotgun blast with aiming up pretty much guaranteed a headshot.

Hah, I remember doing this so much :).

I also wonder if it's affected by any aim assist provided to the controller vs using KB+Mouse?

In this one? I don't know. I played with a controller but aim assist off. Yes, my balls are very big. Almost as big as the spread of my shots because I missed a lot...

It's ok, I'm sure I look like a drunken marksman as I attempt to follow the movements of the enemies with the mouse cursor :p.

Hardcore mode is designed to be cheesed. Go ahead and watch literally any playthrough of hardcore on Youtube and you'll see... it's meant to be played when you know 100% where to go and what to do. Everybody who plays it memorizes scripted triggers and uses them to run past enemies when they're still going through their jumpscare animation.

Like the licker in the C4 room for example. They immediately pick up the bookshelf blocking the door before the licker spawns in, then they just run out of the room as the licker is going through its scriped appearance animation.

And half the people getting S+ rank on hardcore are using the infinite knife so... don't feel bad. Nobody's playing hardcore mode properly. They're cheesing it.

What jumpscare animation? You mean the zombies starting the run to grab you? I don't think avoiding it is 'cheesing', it's a legitimate move.

First time I blew up the C4 I put the bookshelf back in place bc I understood it's up to no good. In fact I checked the whole room for changes because that was expected)

The animation though? Didn't know there was one.

I *believe* (though I could be wrong) that setting off the explosion causes the zombie hanging from the roof by the door to fall to the floor and get up, the bookcase to fall, but the licker not to spawn. You can then deal with the zombie, right the book case, nip back and get the medallion, which seems to trigger the licker when you walk outside the metal gate you blew open - it climbs in from the roof, giving you a chance to leg it.

That's on standard, might be different on hardcore.
