Erm.. The director of The Evil Within is Shinji Mikami. He was the director for the original RE and RE4, producer for RE 2, 3, CV.
To say The Evil Within is a game trying to wear an RE skin is a tad funny seeing that it is made by the originating father of RE. It's his idea and his style, so it's not exactly copying if he is copying himself?
Furthermore, I think his influence on RE is felt when he left Capcom, seeing how RE5 and RE6 turned out to be more action orientated.
Fatal Frame series
Syren (or was it Siren?)
Clock Tower series
Fear 1 might be interesting for some horror fans despite being heavily shooter based and the AI, hilariously, is far more advanced than most AI in even modern games (tho it absolutely has some dumb elements that could be exploited as well).
Dead Space series
Metro series (kinda but also an FPS game, but it is slower and much more atmospheric).
If you are looking for something more atmospheric like Silent Hill, you should try Dreadout.
Agree. It really depends on how you define "Horror". Different people have different expectations regarding what "horror" must be. But the Dead Space series was enjoyable, as was both Evil Within games. They aren't the same as RE, which is good or you'd get bored with repetition, yet they are "you vs. creatures" type situations.
Was like just take your cheap kill & lets do it all over again & this was most of the game.
I've had to had die like I don't know guessing 100 times so far in Evil Within haven't beat it once.

Oppresive atmosphere is something hard to accomplish these days and in that regard CoF puts every attempt at horror like "Evil Within" and the likes to shame.
Try this game. Its inspired by the RE games, and it has a free demo available to try before you buy.

Ignore the folks in this thread who seem to have some very odd experiences with the game.
This game came out in 2001, the best in the series in my opinion. The newer ones are awful, and the older ones are way too outdated. But beware the game has serious compatibility issues, especially on Windows 10. Who knows, there might be a way to fix it.
Oh ♥♥♥♥. I might have to check this out.
