edit: I know some regions like UK and maybe AU will probaly get a boxed release. What I would like to know is if there's going to be a NA physical release as well. The only place I found something suggesting there may be one is on playasia.

is 50,20 Euros and physical retail is 42,90 Euros. Both are pre order versions. Both have different ID:s too. If you think the prices are messed up, no they are not: Some people are so lazy nowadays that they prefer digital download instead for boxed physical retail. Hard to say if North Americas will get physical boxed PC version too, Capcom will probably look at the map and see where most fans are in %.

Boxed PC games in the US have been declining for years and in most cases the disk doesn't actually hold anything other than what amounts to a steam link. Hell even the stores that do decide to carry PC games have a very small selection. At least this is the case where I live in the US. It is kind of disappointing, but at this point I prefer digital anyway. I've had too many disks lost, stolen or broken and with digital they are (presumably) always there. The only downside is the reliance on internet, but when the disks don't actually contain the game in most cases it doesn't matter anyway and still has the same issue. So I usually only buy a physical copy if it's a really cool CE. If not 100% digital is fine with me.

They've been releasing physical versions of the games for a while for PAL regions (RE Origins, RE4 UHD and RE7 etc), but you'll still need Steam and the code. It only makes sense to get it if you've got slower download speeds or a cap. If the price is the same anyway, but if you can get the "disc" cheaper, you may as well save yourself some money.

It's not even just Metal Gear. DOOM is exactly the same way. It doesn't matter that I have the disc in a steel case as a collectors item, because as soon as you put in the disc it made you add the game to your Steam account and you had to then download the entirety of the game. It's actually a common practice for any game that requires a Steam account. DNF was also the same.

Most physical releases on PC these days are just codes in boxes. Barring a few like GTA V.

I buy boxed PC games all the time for my collection. Most still come with a disk and not a code...

Only few games used this "Boxed physical retail copy" which only included the Steam client, because of the backlash from customers, so it was abandoned. Mafia III was on 6 DVD:s

I'm not as optimisitic about it being gone as you are. But like I said it doesn't matter anyway because physical PC releases aren't common here, due to nobody really selling PC games in general. My options are nearly limited to Amazon and other online sources anyway. So it just occurs to me that, unless it's a cool collector's edition or something, there is no point in waiting for delivery when I could just go digital. I mean hell even SC2 was sold on cards here.
