Don't bother.
Not worth it.
It becomes a great last resort weapon in a boss fight but you'll find a lot of veterans opt for the inventory space since it's efficiency is questionable and you generall want to conserve ammo, not spend it faster. If you find you're managing inventory where it's not a problem then you may prefer to have extra firepower on hand for tough situations.
The stock has three big advantages:
- 3 mode fire is optional and only triggers by holding down the firing button/trigger, so you can still fire single shots. Also the 3 round burst is pretty accurate if you compensate for the recoil a bit (that means pushing down the mouse/right stick while firing it), which allows you to e.g. pull 3 bullets into a zombie's head in record time with some minor practice.
- 3 round burst is great for hard enemy/boss encounters where DPS on certain weakspot matters (deal as much damage in as little time as possible), especially the G-type and its eye, Cerberus (zombie dogs) or lickers.
- Most importantly, it cuts down the aiming time between shots (when you fire and your crosshair becomes super wide) BY OVER 50%, which means you regain full aimed accuracy (tiniest crosshair) in ~0.3 seconds, meaning you can hit a weakspot (head or knees of zombies, whichever you prefer) repeatedly way faster and easier. It doesn't affect the initial aiming time when you ready the gun though.
The big disadvantage is that you sacrifice two rather than one inventory slot for the Madilda, though I'd argue that the easier survival (easier and quicker kills, which also means less healing), easier ammo conservation thanks to missing headshots less often and getting rid of one of the Matilda's big weaknesses (low DPS against enemies where you need it) if you need it makes the upgrade worth it. Also you can still unequip the stock if you really need the extra inventory space.
TL;DR: Use the stock for the big aim time decrease alone. You can still fire single shots.
You can detach it and reattach at will. So use it whenever you need that boost.
