Does the game not discard keys that are no longer useful? I have been in the police station for a while and I just noticed I still have it in my inventory.

No it looks like you have to discard it yourself. It should have a tick next to it to let you know its used.

No, it has a tick under the icon if it's no longer needed.

Once an item has a little red tick on it, you gain the ability to discard it, but you have to do it manually - no more "This key is useless now. Discard it? Yes / No" prompts, sadly.

This includes other items like cranks and the like, not just exclusive to keys. Once you see that little red tick, you know it no longer serves a purpose. Throw it into your item box if you like collecting stuff, or discard it from your inventory menu.
