Good to know that the community is toxic, good thing that multiplayer is not a thing
There are plenty of ways to have it work, from controlling individuals, to classes, to smaller subsquads (like the beach teams shown here). Unlike Zelda or God of War there are multiple units to be controller so MP would be a possibility.
If the smaller squads become more involved in the overall design of the game then MP may show up in later titles, but for the way the game is currently designed MP would most likely be more burdensome (i.e. slow the game down) than its worth.
I think the most obvious example of good coop is the TMNT series. Battle Nexus 2 could be completed 100% alone, but playing it with friends had advantages to it. Heck, it even disadvantages.(shared life bar, friendly fire).
With Xcom the only thing you are getting is half your squad taken away and given to your friend. Which is kinda meh. You don't get fighting on opposite fronts. No tactical advantages. No cool unique strats. Its almost the exact same. It just isn't worth it in this kind of game.
Command and conquer red alert 3 is a good example of a strategy game with coop.
Total war warhammer is a good example of both turn based and Real time strategy coop.
A Xcom game would have to be built from the ground up with Coop in mind for it to truly benefit the player experience.
It wouldn't work in the campaign, but it's possible to create a separate coop mode, maybe something similar to what Starcraft 2 has, where each player control his own squad and fight together against waves of enemies, while some objectives pop up in the map. Each player could have his own base to manage, then the matchmaking happens in the Geoscape. Instead of scanning the map for missions, you just start matchmaking and play a mission with someone, then each player goes back to his own base at the end of the mission. Since you won't be scanning, time will pass when you go to a mission.
They could also try a PvPvE mode. Both players are fighting the aliens and trying to complete the same objective, but they are enemies, so you can choose to focus on completing the objective or just go after the other player. One of the things that I don't like in Xcom MP is that, into both players meet, the experience is quite boring since you need to wait the other player turn without seeing what he's doing. Adding some alien pods and reinforcements to the mix would keep things interesting and add more strategy to the mode, since you get to decide between fighting the other player or focusing on the objective. Both coop and PvPvE modes could use the same base to launch missions.
Just look at Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, I played through both games with my couch coop buddy without any problems. You can discuss tactics together and experience the story with your friend.
Saying that coop wouldn't work in any game where you control more than one character is quite ignorant tbh.
The experience is playing with buddies to a coop game, disscusing strategies, s***ing over point blank missed with your friend laughing on the back. It isn't necessary to get any advantage, the real advantage is that is way more funny.
Shame there is no co-op so far in this game or any other official Xcom game to date but we always have Wastelands 3 to look forward to as that 100% does. Just a shame it's release has been pushed back from May to August.
To all you NICE! and NORMAL! people out there, enjoy the game :)
