Will there be multiplayer coop?
Can I play this with a friend?

Why does everyone ask for multiplayer co op in XCOM? Half the questions in XCOM 2 were just about that. Something like that would never really work in the campaign. Though it would be nice if one could use the new steam feature to play multiplayer games with your buddy who doesn´t own the game. Would allow you to also play with friends who don´t like these kinds of games.

Good to know that the community is toxic, good thing that multiplayer is not a thing

People are allowed to express their opinion - if they think that MP doesn't make sense here, they can say that. If they actually badmouthed you when doing so, there'd be something to be upset about.

I mean, there's mods that allow it.

There's no mods for this game yet, it's not out. There will be modding support, though.

No conformation, but it is VERY unlikely, as if it were a thing you would see it as a major talking point.

There are plenty of ways to have it work, from controlling individuals, to classes, to smaller subsquads (like the beach teams shown here). Unlike Zelda or God of War there are multiple units to be controller so MP would be a possibility.

If the smaller squads become more involved in the overall design of the game then MP may show up in later titles, but for the way the game is currently designed MP would most likely be more burdensome (i.e. slow the game down) than its worth.

I just think coop doesn't add anything to xcom.

I think the most obvious example of good coop is the TMNT series. Battle Nexus 2 could be completed 100% alone, but playing it with friends had advantages to it. Heck, it even disadvantages.(shared life bar, friendly fire).

With Xcom the only thing you are getting is half your squad taken away and given to your friend. Which is kinda meh. You don't get fighting on opposite fronts. No tactical advantages. No cool unique strats. Its almost the exact same. It just isn't worth it in this kind of game.

Command and conquer red alert 3 is a good example of a strategy game with coop.

Total war warhammer is a good example of both turn based and Real time strategy coop.

A Xcom game would have to be built from the ground up with Coop in mind for it to truly benefit the player experience.

It doesn't say that it'll have MP in the store, so no, it won't, which makes sense, considering that this is a low budget spin-off, and Xcom MP was never successful to begin with. It wouldn't make sense to invest on MP in this game. I hope they will try some kind of coop in Xcom 3 and just give up on this model of PvP that they been using.

It wouldn't work in the campaign, but it's possible to create a separate coop mode, maybe something similar to what Starcraft 2 has, where each player control his own squad and fight together against waves of enemies, while some objectives pop up in the map. Each player could have his own base to manage, then the matchmaking happens in the Geoscape. Instead of scanning the map for missions, you just start matchmaking and play a mission with someone, then each player goes back to his own base at the end of the mission. Since you won't be scanning, time will pass when you go to a mission.

They could also try a PvPvE mode. Both players are fighting the aliens and trying to complete the same objective, but they are enemies, so you can choose to focus on completing the objective or just go after the other player. One of the things that I don't like in Xcom MP is that, into both players meet, the experience is quite boring since you need to wait the other player turn without seeing what he's doing. Adding some alien pods and reinforcements to the mix would keep things interesting and add more strategy to the mode, since you get to decide between fighting the other player or focusing on the objective. Both coop and PvPvE modes could use the same base to launch missions.

I'm always surprised when people answer like this, how exactly would it not work? I'm quite sad that XCom2 has no local couch coop, you could easily divide your squad among two players, everyone playing the designated squad members and you take action when it's your squad members turn.

Just look at Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2, I played through both games with my couch coop buddy without any problems. You can discuss tactics together and experience the story with your friend.

Saying that coop wouldn't work in any game where you control more than one character is quite ignorant tbh.

It just that there is no difference between coop and singleplayer. All you get out of this system is characters being taken away from 1st player and given to the 2nd player. There is no difference in the experience between that and normal solo play. To truly make Xcom coop worth something, they would to change the experience in some meaningful way. Xcom coop CAN work, but it needs more than just Splitting squadmates between players.

The experience is playing with buddies to a coop game, disscusing strategies, s***ing over point blank missed with your friend laughing on the back. It isn't necessary to get any advantage, the real advantage is that is way more funny.

Just because some of you seem to have very off putting personalities doen't mean we all have. Some of us have actual friends that we like to be sociable with and have a beer and play the same game. I mean just because you have never had the chance to sit in the same room and play hot seat and share your troops with a friend and have some laughs as no one wants to play with you don't automatically think this is true for the rest of us.

Shame there is no co-op so far in this game or any other official Xcom game to date but we always have Wastelands 3 to look forward to as that 100% does. Just a shame it's release has been pushed back from May to August.

To all you NICE! and NORMAL! people out there, enjoy the game :)
