If those are male vipers im sure the story will cover why they’re there 5 years after XCOM 2.
Or, perhaps a subspecies (Be it forced or natural) or a rare case of Convergent Evolution? Since, if you look at their head/neck, the Adder is missing the frills that every other Viper and variant has. It's closer to, well, an Adder, a snake without frills.
(I think it's going to be a subspecies, as Adders in real life are part of the Genus 'Vipera')
