People will be upset about their game turning into a Saturday morning cartoon... right, totally....
It's using the same models and assets as XCOM 2, the only exception being new characters, places and vehicles.
Also, if you hadn't forgotten, XCOM 2 wasn't really serious in it's presentation either. It has a sort of "Superhero" vibe with the music and missions. Really it's kind of comparable to a sci-fi GI Joe. Even the old XCOM games (which literally used comic style intros and movies for cutscenes) did the same thing, more or less.
XCOM outside of Enemy Unknown / Enemy Within hasn't really ever been serious, except for maybe the Bureau, but that was a lead-in to Enemy Unknown, so I'm not really counting it.
I don't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know either. What's the point of even talking here. It's a budget title with a Fortnite aesthetic in the character design and very low quality assets on the interior environment, it's frankly undeniable and you may as well have an argument about grass being blue.
Stuff this, you can't find any info on the game here.
If you compare screenshots of XCOM 2 that take place in the pristine ADVENT cities to the screenshots in this game, there's hardly any difference at all due to both featuring quite clean , low-detail interiors by design. The Steam page also has screenshots showing off places like the lower cityscapes, and they more or less look the same as they were in XCOM 2 with the appropriate amount of grunge. Also, the majority of the assets for Chimera Squad were lifted straight off XCOM 2, to the point where it wouldn't be wrong to call this an XCOM 2 DLC if not for the fact that it's sold as its own separate game.
Most people calling it a "mobile game" only do so due to the UI, but even then how's that any different from how minimalistic the XCOM 2 and XCOM:EU interfaces were?
Still, I do believe that intros are the worst offender and made the bulk of impression.
UPD: Just to illustrate what do I mean. Open the first trailer. It's starting with very XCOM2 intro with ADVENT logo, and then it turns into literal cartoon. Also base interface elements, operation pictures, all this stuff. When this intro hit me, I just instinctively started to mentally highlight such things.
Aren't those kids loving Far Call: Bloody Dragoon? And and Sexy Line Miami? It's also all Disco and stuff!
I mean. You're clearly wrong. It's the same as X-COM 2. The glaring difference is the marketing media.
