Why are crits weak?
I feel like crits are really weak in this game. On top of flanking being only a +50% crit chance and weapons having no base crit, they just don't seem to do much damage? On a consistent basis I seem to crit for damage that's already within my weapon's damage range (e.g. critting for 7 damage on a shotgun shot dealing 6-8 damage). Has anybody else ran into this?

Crits in this game means +1 to whatever random damage was rolled for the weapon.

Talon ammo helps, gives a +2 to crit damage.

But yeah, if you roll bad on damage the crit can do damage well within the weapons normal damage range. It's still more damage than you would have done, but the extra +1 isn't great by default.

This was likely done because on the tight maps getting crits is easy and with the old XCOM2 crits enemies and agents would drop like flies.

But if you want, there is a mod in the workshop that increases the crit damage.

Everything in this game is badly done.

I would SO have received this better if a huge "+1" above the target would appear instead of showing me a crit. It would look way better and would be way more pleasing.

They took the engine of Xcom2 but tweaked a lot of stuff which is poorly explained. Since it is exactly like Xcom2 then people rightfully expect it to _be_ like Xcom2. But it isn't.

Wait, it's +1? ...wow, that's underwhelming. I assumed it was +33% damage rounding down or something.

"Everything in this game is badly done because I personally didn't like something for a weird reason!"

Feel free to express your opinion in a way that is... well, expressing your opinion instead of just trash-talk.

I like some of the things that you don't like, and that's okay, and we're allowed to disagree. It's all good. But this kind of unintelligent hating really brings down the quality of the whole discussion board.

Theres a mod on the workshop that makes critical damage like previous xcom games of 50% damage. If the critical damage was max damage +1 it would make a bit of sense but currently its just +1. So you can roll min damage then crit and do the unexciting default damage of a gun.

This could happen in old XCOMs just the same. Pistol crits could just roll the high end base damage. It's the same system as XCOM 2 but the base flank crit chance is 33 instead of 40 now and crits are now just +1 instead of varying from weapon type to weapon type (unless an Andromedon Robot lands a crit punch, then it's lights out with +12 damage added to the 5-6 to your face).

It creates a much more controlled environment where flanks are beneficial but not a nigh-guaranteed kill unless you have the base damage to back it up.

I like the irony of you stating that it is exactly like Xcom 2... Then proceed to list all the reasons why it change it so it's not like Xcom 2 anymore...

Yeah, seriously. This game is so poorly thought out it's not even funny. One of the most fun things to do from XCOM 2 (and that would have fit perfectly with Chimera Squad) is to run around flanking people with a crit shotgun build. Now, that shotgun barely does any damage early on, especially to the stacking armor of Praetorians.

In a game full of trying to be as fast paced as possible, it sure seems like they tried to slow down player damage tremendously.

Even without super high crits, most enemies don't stay alive from a crit shotgun blast. Maybe they stick around a bit longer on impossible, but veteran (or whatever is above normal) allows you to kill quite a few enemies with a single shot.

With free breach shots, grenades being free actions, run & gun plus 2-3 shotgun shots, stacking turns by manipulating the turn order, etc. the inclusion of 50% crits would break the balance at any difficulty. They'd have to pad enemy HP by 50%, but that's create problems for the other classes.

The crit bonus is balanced for the gameplay. It's a bonus rather than an OP strategy that puts the game in easy mode.

Are you saying that a shotgun blast to the back should only do a moderate amount of damage more than a shotgun blast 50 ft away over cover? Of course it's easy mode, it's a SHOTGUN TO THE SPINE.

Also, idk what game you're playing, but the only enemies I can one-shot with a crit shotgun shot in Chimera Squad are snakes since they have 4 hp. Even the minereaders or whatever can take a full crit blast no problem. Unless you're talking end-game upgrades, in which case that +2 is sooooooooooo useful.

And speaking of run & gun, you sure as ♥♥♥♥ don't get that until late game. Even the basic abilty she gets to gain an extra bonus action after breaching doesn't even work properly. Oh, she gets an extra bonus action? Just kidding, she still has the same movement range as before. This game is broken and you know it.

Its fun until one of your guys gets instakilled by a shotgun guy. And because if small maps and interleaved timeline that would happen a lot.

Godmother movement range isn't updated to show it initially, but if you just make a blue move with her, you'd notice she can still make another blue move.
Stormtempter May 8, 2020 @ 1:54pm
She does get 3 actions. Its just that a gun shot is a turn-ending action normally.

Strap her with a reflex grip and an epic shotgun, and you can take 4 shots on turn 1.
