It's nothing like the gacha game.
And you won't be punished for bringing the same element, like bringing an ice character to an encounter with an ice boss. You can still freeze it just fine.
So for example, let's say you're using Lancelot, who is Water, but has the War Elemental sigil equipped, If you face an enemy who has a Wind weakeness, your Lacelot's attafks will do bonus damage as if he were a Wind character.
I would suggest keeping the enemy's type in mind if you're having trouble in a fight, as the correct element gets a good damage boost. I'd say it matters most when it comes your team's big super team up attack. Since the character who starts the chain determines the type of the big explosion at the end you can end fights quicker if you use the right type of SBA to start the chain.
Overall though you can ignore elements throughout most of the game. You only really have to start optimizing your group in the final difficulty IF you want to skip boss phases and farm fights faster.
TL;DR: the right type of damage ends fights faster, which may make them easier.
You should really share the source of that sigil and how rare it is before praising it from the rooftops. It's SUPER rare and only drops from curios after you unlock the final difficulty. It's REALLY not something a new player needs to worry about.
