In term of damage its Narmaya and Vasaraga
Most useful are Vane and Gran for buffs
Most fun to use based on play style most likely Siegfried and Percival
It depends what you prefer, do you prefer just to do most damage in group or to have fun while also you do decent damage
Vane is also fun but he is very tanky
I decided on Lo and Cagliostro I will continue to push both of them up
Play the one you like.
Aesthetically, he looks very cool. Big and strong. Hefts around a massive scythe. Wields dark magic. Wears a horned helmet and a billowing cloak. Voiced by Kenpachi Zaraki from Bleach.
Gameplay wise, he is fun and easy to play. For damage, all you have to do is tap the light attack button twice, and then charge your heavy attack two times. Each charged heavy attack in this combo swings twice, so with the XXYY combo you swing four times. That's it. This deals far and away the most damage in the game and you did it without having to juggle butterflies or avatars or whatever. With other characters, you have to put in more effort to deal less damage, but Vaseraga isn't boring to play like a ranged character. You never use his skills for the purposes of dealing damage as nothing can deal more damage than Vaseraga's XXYY. Instead you use his abilities for utility, ie Batallions of Fear to chase a boss across the arena, or Immortal Pain so you can ignore AoEs, or Forgotten Tales to bring the boss back to you.
That being said, you shouldn't pick a character based on how much damage they deal. The content in this game is easy. You can beat all of the content as any character, so just pick whichever one you enjoy the most.
Melee - Lancelot
Not by pure dps, but by overall controll. These 2 are just easy to use and good.
For examples:
* Slimepede (Manic quest, you will often farm your money here) => Rackam practically just hold one button and win MVP.
* Lucius => Vane as supportive role most often would win MVP, especially with that barrier skill. Not for speedrunning though.
* The new behemoth "Lock Horns" => Charlotta if you can dish out her parry + warpath sigil. Otherwise, Tweyen, Io or Cagliostro.
* The red Bahamut you often will farm for Terminus weapons => Percival as turret handler, Eugen as deck keeper.
* Pyeta => Narmaya with her pink stance charge attack will hit Pyeta along all it's small bits. Then you got Vaseraga and Io
* The duo G&M in quest wolf and veil => Yodarha, just wait a bit at start then activate that parry "Tit-for-Tat" and you get instant 3 marks. You can protect your whole team with mirage after that.
* That super big titan boss you fought on desert => Ferry, her attacks can hit the leg core even behind those "walls"
* You are looking for that "Speedrun this X boss under Y minutes without dying or using items" trophies?? Lancelot is your key here.
Stop worrying about what character is "optimal" and go with whoever seems most fun.
Changes with character's mechanic like Captain, which able reset Arts Level decay timer (6 seconds) & allows cooldown reduction effect from gaining Arts Level, which makes Cooldown Reduction sigils kinda useless outside Link Time skills spam.
Now Captain's mechanics is more flexible and promotes more aggressive gameplay.
I only noticed Captain (my main) for now, dunno about other characters.
