When to recruit new characters

As far as I know i need to level up my main to lvl 60 and when recruit new characters. Is this most optimal way?

You need to unlock maniac difficulty for new recruits to come in at the max recruitment level (level 60 with ~65% of masteries unlocked). Personal character levels have nothing to do with it.

Also consider the endgame weapon grind when recruiting, as killing a certain boss will drop the best weapons for characters you have. The larger your available character pool, the less likely you'll get the weapon for the characters you're actually using.

Either as soon as you can for your main(s) and then you wait until end of the game at Maniac difficulty to do so.

Wait till maniac difficulty or proud difficulty for photo bahamut. If you know you are sticking to your main for long time, then holding the recruitment tickets will give you better odds in getting the desired terminus weapon. Unless like me, you get it last.

get your main team's weapons sorted then extend the roster however much you want

otherwise you will be posting like 100+ others who said they are 100 runs in and their main still doesn't have the weapon, but everyone they don't really play; does
