Steady Focus's description confuses me
Can someone explain exactly how it works?

Does it only grant the defense buff and stout heart while charging attacks? Or all the time?

Only whilst charging attacks. Otherwise stout heart sigil itself would be useless.

Thanks, so it's mostly useless for my Id and Siegfried, lol.

It sucks though because I would love to slot in some generically defensive sigil that just gives defense without conditions like Stronghold needing to be at full HP to get any benefit.

You can get it as a secondary stat on a + sigil. So no need to take up a whole slot for it (unless you get one that rolls with a secondary you really want as well. Maybe Potion Hoarder).
Combined with Stout Heart sigil, the defensive buff is always active (because you always have Stout Heart).

You can't get steady focus and potion hoarder on the same + sigil because they are the same type of sigil trait. utility traits like these can't even get a + sigil either, only be the random trait on others that can have a +.

The rest is incorrect to. Defence and stout heart provided by steady focus is only during charging attacks.

Stout heart has its own hidden damage reduction that's not listed in the game but people have shown exists. This is what you are seeing, not the defence bonus from steady focus that isn't active outside of charging attacks.

Charging attacking is confusing. Does it mean press and hold the button that only some characters apply (like Io's normal attacks x and y)? Or during any attack combo like captain's normal x? I would think by description it's press and hold attacks, but a lot of other posts indicate during any attack sequence.

It's STRICTLY when you're holding a button to charge up an attack or skill (e.g. Io's X normals, Stargaze, and Flowery Seven, Ghanda's Raging Fist, etc). It doesn't show a Stout Heart status symbol but you will be given Stout Heart while charging, and any bonuses to Stout Heart defense (e.g. Steel Nerves) will also be applied.

So with the Captain for example, it wouldn't apply while you're combing normally, but it WILL apply when you're charging your Power Raise.

It seems to affect any attack that charge up to a stronger attack. Abilities that requires you to hold down doesnt always count.

Attacks like Rackam's Coffinmaker aren't affected despite having to hold down the button, I guess its because its constantly attacking instead of building up to a hard hit. Rackam's air attack may have a charge animation but it doesnt register as a charged attack.

Rosetta's rose placement doesn't work either. This is because it doesn't charge up rather you're channeling and aiming for placement.

Holding down Ferry's normal attack work but her onslaught doesn't. This is because holding down her normal charges into a stronger attack.

Good on characters like Io who needs some time to charge an attack and can get easily interupted.

Ok, I guess I will consider using the "stout heart sigil" sold by the merchant instead. That one I guess should work for everyone for uninterruptible any attack. Too bad it's not a + sigil...

You can combine the Stout Heart Sigil with Steel nerves, which at the max level of 15, gives you 15% defense while stout heart is active... which is always is, with said Stout Heart sigil. I use it on my Vane to help me just ignore enemy offensive combos.
