Regarding the other games in the series there are only two. The long running Gatcha browser/mobile game and the Versus Rising 2D fighter.
I have played neither of them myself and I did not feel like I was in the dark. The game provides enough background.
This is a misleading comment.
A summary of each character's background and why they joined the crew prior to this game is available via their first 3 Fate Episodes (short VN style cutscenes).
Actually, no game required tho. Some reading about the world on the site or wiki should be enough to tell you the story behind.
In summary, the background story is your typical "an adventure team traveling across the world in seek of treasure" like One Piece or Hunter x Hunter esque.
MC encounter ally => meet new antagonist/problem => beat the enemy or solve the problem => gets reward => new story arc => repeat.
GBFRelink is like skipping to "meet new antagonist/problem" part after few repeats.
Some helpful terms:
"Captain" refers to the MC character, the one you set gender and name at game start.
"Grandchyper" => your airship.
"Lyria" => The summoner girl.
"Vyrn" => MC initial pet. Think like Paimon in Genshin.
"Katalina / Rackam / Eugen" => Captain crewmembers.
Also, there is an anime with two seasons to date, if you're really interested
