Why no Japanese characters readable in English?
My Japanese is still in baby mode, so I necessarily can't read it myself, but why can't Japanese characters be seen with the English setting on? I'm sure English is completely readable in the Japanese text, so why not the other way around? It'd be nice to see something other than □□□□ all the time too, y'know?
And it'd be helpful to know what JP players are saying for those who are using English in-game but can still read Japanese.

Really? So this game just doesn't support Japanese fonts unless you select Japanese text in languages?

Yeah, in the language settings, it literally states for the English setting, any foreign characters will be replaced with the square letters, but it doesn't say it for Japanese. It really makes no sense why they can't just mix it in with each other.
I'm confused about what you're trying to do. Are you trying to use the japanese VO with japanese text?

Because that works fine for me.

If you play with someone from Japan their name might look like トキコ, however in game you'll see [][][]

Oh, now I understand. You and the OP are playing with english text and can't read japanese while doing so. I just tried that and yeah it shows cubes.

Because computer OS are based on alphabetical input systems. Even japanese input systems like Microsoft-IME use the latin alphabet to input the kana transcriptions and turn them into actual kana and kanji. There are also many other situations where Japanese people need to type in the latin letters, for example in web page or email adresses. So the Japanese Windows version comes with latin fonts by default, while people in the west don't get Japanese fonts along with their English, French or Swedish language packs.
I have a japanese language pack because I regularly use japanese on my PC, but it doesn't change anything.

Me too. Guess it depends on what language packs you have installed on your computer. I have Microsoft Japanese IME installed and it works perfectly fine.

No, I misunderstood what the OP was trying to do. It's as he described.

Dammit, I thought OP means they doesn't see what the characters are saying in Japanese.

I thought so too, but I just tried playing with english text and my character name turned into cubes.
My Japanese part of my name appears as cubes in the game.
