It does a decent job of giving you all the story info of what came before in nice little "Fate Episodes" and other character summaries.
the only reason people in the west really know what granblue is is due to the anime and versus
Season 1 of the "Granblue Fantasy: The Animation" does a good job of introducing you to the characters and how they met. The first seven episodes are currently available to watch on Youtube, courtesy of Cygames. The remaining episodes can be streamed elsewhere. Episode 8 is more or less a filler episode, which is probably why Cygames only put the first seven on Youtube. Episodes 9 through 11 are worth watching if you enjoyed the first seven episodes, however. Episode 12 is the finale for the first season, but it's disappointing by comparison as it comes across as more of a commercial for alternate characters.
If you're enjoying the game or think you'll enjoy the game, I'd recommend watching the first season of the anime. As others have mentioned, Relink does attempt to bring you up to speed, but there's an impact difference between reading a few lines summarizing an event and watching it unfold over several episodes. And even silly things like Lyria's stomach growling or Vyrn's reaction to being called a lizard make more sense or are more endearing than they otherwise might be.
Astrals are just superior beings that warred with humans. Astral scientists created primal beasts to fight with them in the war.
The devs said that some of the characters in this game will be officially added to the mobile game in the future.
The first few Fate Episodes for all the characters are essentially a short summary of their character events of the first three arcs to get you caught up.
The game closer to an actual sequel is Versus as the things going on there are actually relevant to the current events of the original game.
