Game is designed to kinda use an AI party. You can try doing quests after the story with just 1 character, but its going to be significantly harder than with a party. You can give it a shot, but you might struggle doing solo no teammate quests. I haven't tried it myself yet.
Around 10-15 hours into the story you can unselect the captain from the party. Around 20 hours in I had unlocked all the characters except for 2-3 so they became available at a good pace.
I know you soloed most of your way through endgame contents with AIs, but do you happen to know if it's possible (or feasible) to progress from the end of main story towards Maniac/Proud difficulties using only 1 character and play exclusively online?
