What's the deal between Normal Edition and Special Edition?

The only thing you're missing is color pack 1 (for whatever reason, lol) if you go with the special edition.

The upgrade pack just seems to be the items including the sword, just not the colour palettes which seem absurdly expensive for colour swaps

Standard is good enough. Color look meh and only support 6 characters. That weapon is useless towards the end. EXP item and such is not worth it. If you want, you can just use a trainer.
