Civ 4 crashing on startup (Win 11)

Sort of. What I've found is that the game only loads normally if I launch it from steam right after stating up my computer. For some reason it begins crashing on launch when I open up Chrome or do anything else before launching the game.

Im having same problem it gets to init python and then crashes even if i opened without chrome like you said please help if anyone knows!

Me too, something has changed, I am trying to get it running on my laptop after a reformat and now it doesn't work

Might be a fix, change the contents of the following file so that
"C:\Users\<username>\Documents\My Games\Beyond the Sword\CivilizationIV.ini" contains FullScreen = 0
It then might work correctly in windowed mode. If you have a high resolution screen, the window will be small.

Once you are in windowed mode, go to graphics options in the civ menu and check the screen resolution is set to something sensible (eg. 1920x1200), then exit civ.

Then set the fullscreen parameter back to 1 in the ini file.

Before opening civ again, set the windows display settings resolution to 1920x1200. Then it might work properly, you will just have to set windows display resolution each time you want to play.
