Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

Civ IV programming adding OP barbarians
Civ IV programming somehow adding OP barbarians that stand over goodie huts and appear out of no where to kill scouts. Their technology is so advanced it is outside of the time period of the game. I just started out, killed the other two civs because of their increasing aggressive and OP advancements, then the barbarians showed up hunting down my schouts. An example of the OP advancements is the introduction of spy networks at the BC level. Somehow I obtained the Schotland Yard building. This same type of thing has happened on many games. I would like to play without strange game mechanics, with a few civs, but I thought I would try it without any other civs, just so I wouldn't feel harrassed. So now barbarians show up, and the military map says there are none. They show up kill my scouts, I replace them, and they show up again. I have played Civ IV many times, this is not normal.

yep you have to nurse those scouts early on, and avoid barbarian villages, full health helps i think:Roman:

Tbh I usually turn off random barbarians, cause it nearly always gets way out of hand. What I like to do instead is to open the world builder and place some fortified barbarian towns at strategic points on the map; usually around gold deposits and the like.

Thanks. Can use both of these suggestions. I had two other civs running and deleted them, just to play the scenario out to a certain point, then I'll bring them back, if I can. Now the barbarians are establishing their own cities so it's pretty much the same, maybe. I'm running 'Beyond the Sword' and I thought it would be more social than constant blood lust. I'll have to run it at the cheiftain level. I'll try all the levels, just to see how they compare.

You get more barbs with mor dark areas.

If you kill of some enemy civs and don't expand, the barbs get a little crazy. great wall helps. having scouts reduce the dark areas help.

don't know what to tell you. I generally dont have an issue but I don't play on higher than prince usually.

To tech, its important. Are you researching rapidly? do you expand too quickly and force your economy to tank?

Religion is key to keep your civ in fund so you can expand and research.

would like to give better advice, it doesn't SOUND not normal. the AI is out teching you. on MARATHON barbarains come earlier. if you are doing marathon you'll see warriors and axemen and whatnot in the BC era.

GIve me your map settings we'll see whats up.

Yes, what you say really seems to apply.

When the game was new I played a lot of single games and had a great time. I never used the editor then. All the factors you brought up are relevant to this game. This time I think I decided to play at a higher level and I always liked the Marathon games, this one is as well. I think I just didn't play with barbarians on my earlier games. I don't recall the level setting.

How do I look up my map settings? Huge and Marathon. I have 3 continents. Started with 3 civs and deleted the others with the idea of seeing the civ development without all the setbacks of fighting.

Well, then you'd need to turn off the barbs too.

and that isn't a normal game. But whatever floats your boat man.

A huge map normally has what 8 Civs? so with less than that you get more barbs. with no other civs you'd get crazy numbers of barbs.

its to be expected.
