Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword

Civ IV won't launch Windows 10 update
So I recently updated my computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and now whenever I go to launch any of the civ IV games, (vanilla, BTS, warlords, or colonization), the game will start the initial boot screen, but then it crashes due to a "problem that caused the program to stop working correctly"
I've tried checking the game cache, restarting both steam and my computer, and re-installing each game.

Same problem here. Tried Compatibility Mode, but that also crashes the game...

I had a problem when I tried starting the game and it said Failed to Initialize Renderer - Check DirectX Version and Graphics Settiings. I fixed it by right clicking my steam icon and clicking run as administrator. After I did that, Civ 4 started working perfectly. Hope it helps :)

I've pretty much given up on it at this point. I haven't seen any fixes on any forums because this looks like a really rare issue. It seems like just me and a few unlucky handful of people are experiencing this issue. No civ for me :'(

It works for me. This thread has some potential solutions:

The second link solved it for me!
I went into civ IV in my steam folder and opened up properties and selected the option to run in 640x480 resolution

I tried all the above mentioned solutions, even added it to the bypass list on my firewall, no good. Last thing I tried worked though, stupid as it sounds... I UNINSTALLED my virus scanner, the started the game up and it ran fine.

So, I shut down the game and reinstalled the virus scanner. Game still works fine now. So, it sounds weird, but give it a try. It worked for me!

BTW, my anti-virus program is ASC Ultimate 11 in case anyone else has it and this problem too.

Played BTS 2 days ago. Would not start from the desktop link, but from the library. Closed laptop, fired it up again. Game was crashed. From that moment on, i couldnt start via Steam anymore. Always the renderer.
I set the resolution to 640x480, made it start with DirectX 9, nothing... After over 500 hours and without any update, the game stopped working.
Anyone got any ideas?

Just to confirm...
  1. In Steam, you've validated the local files for Civ4?
  2. There is a directory <user profile>\Documents>My Games\beyond the sword\Logs. Anything interesting in there?
  3. Are you comfortable viewing Windows event logs? Anything interesting in there?
  4. Some laptops get a bit weird with graphic settings, based on motherboard chip sets, etc. From the Steam Client you can check Help...System Information to see if this may be a cause.
I have a lightweight tablet laptop w/ Win10 and I'm playing Civ4 BTS w/ Rise of Mankind: A New Dawn. The Windows dxdiag command shows 128MB video memory, but the Steam client shows Primary VRAM of 1024MB. I am playing on 1920 x 1080 on the tablet with Low graphics settings selected in the Civ4 Options screen.

I solve the problem a different way, and I appreciate the heads-up that there may be problems with Windows 10. I maintain an off-line XP computer, an online Win7, and just recently an online Win10. I have an old P850 with Win3.1 I could boot up, but these three cover all of the games I currently play, or have time to play.

I use the XP primarily for HPS Tiller games and such, i.e. high-end hex- or look-down games, because VolcanoMods doesn't work for diddly on Win7. Its utility beyond that is limited. But I will run both the Win7 and the Win10 platforms for the indefinite future for the simple reason that some games, particularly older ones, just work better on Win7. Use a switchbox and hook up both to one monitor.
